Jan Dollar My primary lesson was that I am more resilient than I ever imagined, but it is a blessing to find how much support I had that I never thought I would need. Another thing that I found out is that I need to be my own advocate. All the health professionals are great, but they are not infallible and they cannot read my mind. Some are better than others regarding picking up on nonverbal cues. Jan [ more ]

Enzyme pills for fructose or other sugars
lholdem My GI had a nutritionist who walked me through the FODMAPS diet to identify which sugars were my biggest culprits for gas. Knowing which sugars are worst for me helps me keep a mental tab on what I’m eating and then cut back or take calculated risks as needed/desired. I also used to buy a digestive enzyme supplement from the health food store. It was kind of pricey but it *claimed* to have a more broad spectrum of enzymes than just Lactaid or Gas-X. Could be worth a try? [ more ]
lclassen Regarding sugars... Please read ingredient labels carefully. If it contains any sugar substitutes (sucrose, sucralose, xylitol, erythritol, etc. {anything ending in "ol" is a sugar alcohol}) these can cause distress, increased BM's, extreme diarrhea. My GI took me off of all artificial sweeteners, except aspertame. These sugar alcohols can be found in SOOOO many foods. Even Stevia and/or Monk Fruit usually contain erythritol as well. I've learned that it is very important to read ingredient... [ more ]
Jan Dollar Some people have an insufficiency of pancreatic digestive enzymes. Lactase deficiency is most common, but this is something to discuss with your GI doctor. Maybe it is something that will improve with time, maybe not. You could figure out if specific sugars are the culprit, such as fructose (a common bad actor). If it is a true pancreatic secretion disorder, there are prescription supplements for it. Jan [ more ]

Pain when eating
SteveG I had a partial blockage in 2005. It could be resolved by a contast agent used for an examination. But I often had pain after eating for several weeks after that. I got rid of it after 3 days of fluid nutrition. If you look out for a high caloric full nutrition drink to keep you going for some days without a lack of nutrients and without solid food, perhaps it can help you also. [ more ]

MikeMinton Hi Jake. I am actually 6 years post reversal. But prior to that, I had had numerous back surgeries and was on high levels of narcotic pain medications all the time. Anyone with both j-pouch and pancreatectomy (or pancreas surgery/issues)?
SenoritaG Hi Jan! The U of M has only has had 2 of us. Our Facebook group has discovered 4 total. That may be it. We are just curious to find out! I take Creon for digestive enzymes. My endocrine function was not compromised at all before surgery, but I knew eventually it would be. I am definitely glad I did it. Foreign body in the ileo anal anastomosis

Jan Dollar Um, yes, surgical clips are left in place. Typically, they are often vascular clips and may not be inside the j-pouch. However, the body is an amazing thing. When it perceives something as a foreign body it will work to expel it, even if it takes years. It happens with sutures, orthopedic hardware, vascular grafts, etc.. Also, if you had a polyp removed a clip may have been put in to stop bleeding. These typically slough off in a few weeks. Hopefully, this clip was the source of your... [ more ]

Given antibiotics for the first time for pouchitis - is this what normal feels like?
Sara14 ❤️
LIGuy11 I am now feeling constipated and nauseous again, though I haven't vomited. I called my colorectal surgeon's yesterday (they aren't the ones who performed the actual procedure though). They had me come in and took a look inside in the office and he said the pouch looks fine, and I should see a GI to maybe have my stomach looked at. He mentioned that I could have gastritis? I'm starting to get worried, not sure what is going on here. [ more ]
Scott F This could be great news, especially if you can avoid feeling bitter about 14 years of discomfort. Since the ER seems to know more about pouchitis than your surgeon, it might be time to find a good gastroenterologist. Hopefully your pouchitis stays cleared up after a 10-14 day course of antibiotics. The probiotics most likely to help keep pouchitis away (if used in adequate doses) are Visbiome and VSL #3, but they are very expensive. Some insurance companies cover the prescription-strength... Jan Dollar Gee, I don’t know if your surgeon is expressing wishful thinking or his patients are just luckier than typical. Either way, normal function in the early months can be very frustrating. Jan Dollar With your history of a fistula and your current symptoms, and especially with the improvement with the Cipro, my primary concern is that you have developed an abscess and/or a new sinus tract. I happily use the manufacturer’s “coupons” for several prescription medications in the same way, though not (yet) to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
