polyps in rectal cuff
Sandyj Thank you all for your responses. I am awaiting the biopsy results to see if there was any dysplasia or malignancy of the polyps. I am assuming it will not result in any surgeries right away no matter the result. I have a very severe case of FAP and have been told I will undoubtedly end up with an ileostomy eventually. At this point we are trying to prolong it as long as possible. I have lots of polyps in my stomach and small intestine as well and have had adenomas removed from my ampulla... [ more ]
BillV I went 25 years with a j pouch and had no polyps in the rectal cuff, although a number were removed from the pouch itself and duodenum. At the time, I was on an annual scoping schedule. Then my GI biopsied a suspicious spot in the rectal cuff that turned out to be malignant. A CR surgeon removed it and fortunately took sufficient margin to eliminate risk of spreading. However, I believe my sphincter was compromised by that surgery. Five years later high grade dysplasia was found by the... [ more ]
Scott F Sandy, it is possible to perform "pouch advancement" surgery to eliminate the rectal cuff. I honestly don't know if it's appropriate for you. The surgery is delicate and hand-sewn, best done by a very experienced surgeon. [ more ]

Post operative nausea
Davidee I'm not on any pain meds or anything else it might just be my system is a bit slow to get moving again...Thx for the tip on the anti nausea meds [ more ]
CTBarrister If you are past the postoperative ileus and pouch is emptying properly the nausea is not due to any transit issue. If you had some kind of partial blockage you would know it from pain. If it's just nausea and no pain or discomfort, something else is causing it. What meds are you taking? I would suggest trying Pepto Bismol which will calm the burping and gas and probably relieve the nausea. [ more ]
Davidee I did have a post operative ileous yes so I thought maybe the nausea was left over from that...it seems to be mainly at night now with a lot of burping and gurgling [ more ]

getting redo, questions regarding pouchitis
SolomonSeal New pouch here... was told pouchitis won't happen and if it will it will be easily controlled... here I am with ~15 BM's a day due to "mild" pouchitis. I already said that I think getting a redo is crazy. I wish I had never heard of jpouch, but I know everyone is different. [ more ]
AllyKat I too am diverted recently because of pouchitis gone bad. 15 years. My pouch is still in, how I would love to reconnect but not possible. [ more ]
Scott F There are plenty of antibiotics to try, individually or in combination. Bad side effects from one (or several) of them really don't predict anything about how well a different one willl be tolerated. At a certain point we may just get exhausted, of course, but success is more likely for the persistent person. I think *anyone* struggling to find a pouchitis treatment should probably try Xifaxan, at least if they have health insurance (it's expensive). Other options include Tindamax,... [ more ]

Trying to conceive... Any tips?
reneehow1 I would suggest talking to an ob. We tried for about 5 months, then went to an ob, they did some blood work and also checked for scar tissue, turned out I had one blocked tube, but was ovulating from the other, her suggestion was to try clomid first to release more eggs, then if that didn't work to go from there. I filled the clomid prescription , but found out that month that I was pregnant already. It took 9 months and that was with only one tube. Still it was very reassuring to talk to... [ more ]
clz81 After 6 months of no success, you should definitely be checked for scar tissue. Unfortunately, that is much more like a cause of not getting pregnant for us J-pouchers. At least you know then so you aren't focusing on an issue that isn't really an issue. Still, don't be discouraged, it took us 6 months with our first baby to conceive and that was pre-pouch. [ more ]

Using ememas
Mysticobra I found it more comfortable laying on the left side. I'm right handed. Standing was more difficult for me. It would be difficult to do it sitting on the toilet. No room to administer it. You can do it on your bed. Just put a towel down beforehand. You'll know why. That's a good idea Jan. Never thought to replace the liquid. Warm water would do just as well. Richard. [ more ]
Jan Dollar Basically you are just rinsing. It does not matter what side you lay on. Sometimes I just bend over and administer it while standing up. Plain tap water is best (the concentrated saline can dehydrate you). I dump the Fleets and replace it with warm tap water. Then I administer, repeating until it returns clear. Jan [ more ]

j pouch in one surgery..anyone??
NanJ Hi, WorriedMom, I am also a worried mom. My son was diagnosed with UC at age 13. At first sulfasalazine worked. Then about 1 1/2 yrs later he started to flare. Nothing worked- steroids, remicade, suppositories, antibiotics, diets etc, and 2 hospitalizations. He got TPN in a PICC line, then a laproscopic colectomy and ileostomy last November (age 15). At that point he still had his stapled rectal pouch. Nine days after his colectomy he needed emergency surgery for a complete small bowel... [ more ]

Jan Dollar I did forget to mention that just because you've gone 14 years without incident, it does not mean it should be a shock or surprise to develop obstructive symptoms at any time. We form adhesion tissue within a few weeks of surgery and they remain indefinitely. All it takes is for a kink in the gut to occur and you are obstructed. Most of the time, things right themselves and you are back to your normal routine. Anyone who has had abdominal surgery faces this risk. Jan [ more ]

Rocko Hi, thought I should post a follow-up The symptoms eventually got under control with help from the steroids. liquid vitamins.how do you know if helping or working?
Scott F My rationale for a multi-vitamin is that it takes an enormous amount of vitamin D to keep my blood levels up. I don't know why my absorption would be impaired, but it seems to be, and I'm *guessing* that other nutrients might be similarly malabsorbed. rachelraven My only experience with it is that bone marrow transplants use it in the marrow being transplanted so the blood cells don't crystallize. Scott F DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide. It's a solvent quickly absorbed through skin (along with whatever other crap is on your skin). It would never be used, I think, for post-surgical adhesions in the abdomen, though it might be used by some on the other sort of fascia "adhesions" non-surgeons sometimes talk about. It certainly can work as a local pain killer, but there are plenty of issues (and drug interactions) with it. I'd be astonished if it did anything for strictures. [ more ]

The easiest way to see if you have any new messages (and to check them) is the "Dialogs" button on the top, right of any of these Forum screens (you have to scroll to the top). You can set notifications to email you when you have a new message, but the button turns pink in any case. [ more ]
Char-muir Thanks for all your replies, its good to know tht I'm Not tht only one with these issues and also tht there seems to be quite a lot of options available. I'm from the UK and have had my surgeon since I was 14 (nearly ten years) I probably wouldn't trust anyone else as he has performed all my surgeries so far. He contacted me a few days after the procedure I had to clear infection from behind the fistula and he said tht the incision he has made should heal but I will still be left with the... [ more ]

Paranoid now - abscess or fistula?
virginiac So Deathstalker... what was the outcome - ?? did it heal?? Ive just had another seton drain put in oh well know what to expect these days Cheers from down under [ more ]
DeathStalker Yes, Dan, you are correct. I was just surprised that they saw no tract because after two visits to the doctor to excise the abscess, it was still draining. I would have put money down that it was a fistula but when the surgeon went in on Thursday to do an exploratory procedure, he never found any tracts so he just removed the entire abscess. I hope he's right in that this is all there was. Would hate to have to go through all this again. [ more ]
Pouch4Wf I might be naive, but don't they need to identify the fistula tract before inserting a seton? Hopefully, they were able to visualize and explore the area enough to be confident that there was not a tract. Dan [ more ]

Thought i had a stricture but i did not.....
dgtracy This is so weird. I was scrolling through looking at posts and I must have posted thiswhile still having anesthesia messing with me as I don't remember doing this. I made a new post for issues that are still continuing. [ more ]
Scott F I've been saying for a while now that I think taking psyllium with a small amount of water is a bad idea. IMO it should be taken with plenty of water, and in my experience it works great that way. [ more ]
Jan Dollar As the saying goes, "the proof is in the pudding." Even if it seems improbable, if the doctor finds this stuff is not moving through, then that is the reality. Each of us responds to what we take in as individuals. The trick is in finding what works for you and that perfect balance of thick enough to prevent butt burn, but not so thick as to get clogged up. It is a trick because there is no "rule book" that works universally. Jan [ more ]

Trouble emptying the j-pouch
mgmt10 You may have a stricture that needs to dilated. I dealt with one after my takedown surgery. Ask your dr. [ more ]
DiarrheaKing Hi there, I too have a j-pouch and strugle with this. What helps me immeasurably now is to have a bidet. I used to use a hand held sprayer but this is much better. It actually gives me an enema when I use it and that helps me to empty completely. Mine is like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003TPGPUW?vs=1 They can be a little hit or miss...I have one of the exact same in my second bathroom that doesn't squirt as high of pressure and is not as effective...but still much better than... Butt on fire
CeeeeCeeee What are you eating? At your stage of recovery I was gently introducing my connected J-pouch to simple bland foods. After 6 weeks I began introducing one new food at a time. This regimen was not easy because I had chosen to keep my temporary ileostomy for an entire year and during that time I could eat and drink everything. However, my regimen paid off. Within 9 months to a year I could once again eat/drink everything. Best wishes! [ more ]
SandyS I'm gonna put in my vote for calmoseptine. Wash dry cake it on! Wake up with zero butt burn. It will ruin any underwear tho. FYI [ more ]

Adoption and medical history
AmieMarie I have scar tissue in my fallopian tubes as well. My heath history did not effect our adoption one bit. So no need to worry. It's so great not having to worry about my Daughter having UC like me and my Mother! [ more ]
Sonja6 Yes, thank you very much for posting this! I am a widow 4 years and have had no desire to casually date!! But want very much to have a child and have a family regardless! I refuse to settle just to have a child. That isnt love!! But I have a huge fear that my medical problems will come into question. Especially since I would be a single parent trying to adopt. Thankfully I do work for a great company that does have a adoption program. I know that will be my plus. I have been with them for 7... [ more ]
JMarie Thank you for posting this question. My husband and I are also thinking of adopting. It is encouraging to hear of others who have adopted successfully. I am pretty scared to have a natural birth and don't think I want to continue my genetics. We will be beginning our application process in the coming months. Now, just to keep the pouchitis happy. J pouch interstim Medtronic bowel therapy
SandyS Ps I'm not real sure I'm following this thread so wanted to post again cause I unclicked link. Now I think I am. 😁 good luck I'm not super tech savvy [ more ]
SandyS Hey I can answer this one! Lol I had UC had my Jpouch in 2000. I had several fistulas and every complication known to man. I've had 20 plus surgeries but after YEARS of incontinence my dr suggested interstim. I had my first device implanted nov/dec 2012. It was life changing! I've read horror stories on another site about pain at implant site and nerve damage but I only had 1 time that was wonky about a year after implant and pain was so bad couldn't walk. I turned it off. Saw my dr. Waited... [ more ]
Cozy52 My interstim is bowel incontinence. It is pretty new around here and can't find anyone who has had both and I am going through the trial Part now and in 7 days I may have the permanent one and just wanted total with someone who has had both and wondered how it has worked for them. I have researched everywhere I can think of and reached out to this but no results yet. I would really appreciate it for any suggestions or help I can get. Also, I am interested in anyone who has bowel incontinence... [ more ]

Rae26 Thank u so much Scott:-) [ more ]
Scott F There's lots of advice in prior posts. Don't eat any solids. The most common risk is dehydration, if things stop up completely or you stop drinking. If your pee starts to get dark or stops completely, you need an IV. If you start to vomit or the pain becomes extreme it's time to visit the emergency department. Good luck, Rae! [ more ]

Pregnancy and recurring pouchitis
Vandal-Cane Glad you are doing better. To answer your question about probiotics... I have a 4 year old , 3 year old, and 3 month old. I started taking VSL#3 probiotics since the baby was 1 month old. It cleared up the pouchitis after child birth and got my system back on track. It is ok to use when nursing too and I think it helped the baby get good flora in her system. It is expensive. I got it on amazon. I only used it for about 2 months. It is only for people with uc or crohns. Good luck! [ more ]
Krista_Marie Update: I was admitted to the hospital Monday but great news came out of it. I do not have pouchitis. It's Irritable Pouch Syndrome, which for those of you who don't know is pretty much like it sounds. Its like IBS but in the J-pouch. This condition is treatable with a low dose of antidepressants which actually work in the small intestine to slow down the nerve impulses that trigger pain. I am so relieved. Hopefully this will be the end of hospitals every month and I can go back to enjoying... [ more ]

Celiac disease question ?
Jan Dollar Celiac disease is gluten intolerance. What sets it apart from a gluten sensitivity is that there is damage to the intenstinal villi from the inflammatory response. A non-celiac sensitivity is much more common and does not damage the intestines. http://www.celiaccentral.org/n...ion-and-definitions/ Either way, intolerance or sensitivity can develop over time. Of course, you can self test by going gluten free to see if that improves your symptoms. You just can't do that shortly before testing... [ more ]
Pouchomarx I'm pretty sure it was a blood screen in 2008. Jan, you say gluten "intolerance" can develope over time, cant Celiac as well? If you have the scope and biopsy done and it does not show celiac, cant it show up later in life still? and who knows if i have symptoms? lol. with all my surgeries and on and off pain, I would not be able to tell if it was from something i ate or just my normal aches and pains..lol [ more ]
Jan Dollar Gluten intolerance can develop over time, so if you think you have developed new symptoms since you were last tested, it makes sense to have the screening bloodwork done. Jan [ more ]

Jan Dollar Yes, often with pancreatic cancer, there are no obvious risk factors, just like with UC. Could be environmental exposure. Impossible to say. They still know very little about it. Hard to study a cancer that so quickly kills. Jan [ more ]
CTBarrister Jan, My grandmother who died of pancreatic cancer did not smoke, have pancreatitis or have any family history of cancer nor did she have autoimmune disorder/IBD. It was widely speculated within the family that her work experiences in a factory during World War II which manufactured munitions exposed her to carcinogens which caused the cancer. Both she and a brother who worked in a similar factory which exposed him to assorted carcinogens died of cancers, but their other 4 siblings, my great... [ more ]
