More gas and pain
Scott F I wonder if your pelvic floor needs a refresher? Was there active manipulation or just exercises you came home with? Are you taking the psyllium with a full 8 oz. of water and around mealtime? Have you tried the basics to reduce gas (no carbonated beverages, eating slower to swallow less air, etc.)? Your sore anus could just be from high frequency/straining, or it could be something else. [ more ]

Does the colon play a part in hot weather tolerance?
Winterberry Ask your doctor to test you for HYPER thyroid. For years and years I was unable to tolerate warm weather above 72F. It would make me ill. Turns out I am hyperthyroid and probably was for years. At least now I know why I’m intolerant of any heat and know how to look after myself in summer. Good luck. [ more ]

Severe rectal burning 27 years after surgery
New577 hello, Similar to the experience of the poster above; I had severe pain/burning 24/7 for my first 6 months. Finally, in desperation, I stopped all medicines for 48 hours and started adding them back one at a time until I found the culprit. It was an extended release bladder drug that was absolutely wrecking my pouch function and QOL. You might need to do some detective work to narrow down the cause of these issues. This presumes of course, that your issue is not mechanical or some other... [ more ]
Kerrymareee I have a jpouch going on a year now. I also had burning and it was making me crazy. I decided to go through my meds and remove one at a time for a few days to see if there was a connection. I discovered that the magnesium I was taking daily was the problem! I think the potassium also has an effect. These were recommended by my doctor. But I stopped taking them and feel much better. I still get burning on occasion probably because of what I eat and drink. Crohns diagnosed 2010 Complete... [ more ]
Scott F Is there any connection between the burning sensation and defecating? Does it hurt all the time, or with some other frequency? Does anything make it better (or worse)? Is the pain sharp or dull? [ more ]

How do u know it’s time 4 antibiotics?
Scott F Most people seem to get noticeable symptom improvement after a few days, particularly with Cipro. If I were getting no benefit after 7 or 8 days I might put in a call to my doctor to discuss trying a different antibiotic. A single antibiotic not working doesn’t tell you much - it can still be pouchitis, and a different antibiotic or combination might work fine. [ more ]

PouchLogic I don't stop after 3 days, I'd probably try for a 2 week minimum and I usually stay on for 1 months. I have been able to only go on antibiotics for 2 weeks and have it resolved but sometimes it's not long enough and I end up on them again. [ more ]

Pelvic Floor dysfunction treatment
R-JP4Life It has helped tremendously with PF pain and painful urination and I believe or am being positive about fecal incontinence. I did close to 2 years of research before I was even brave enough to start the journey. I really believe my train left the rails because of my PT’s lack of experience not lack of effort. I just setup a re-evaluation with another person and after the phone call it sounds really good. My lesson learned is it’s no different than anything else. I began to question in January... [ more ]

Stabbing Pain!!!
R-JP4Life Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. While I am dealing with one issue I am not happy about, the pain you describe is exactly the same. If so it may be the Pudenal nerve. My pain was constant since 1995. I just learned to live with it but due to fecal incontinence I ended up in PF Physical Therapy. BUT, be sure its a PT who has experience with your plumbing. It did bring relief for me. [ more ]

New577 I can tell you that after my colectomy two years ago, but before takedown my testicles swelled everyday. I went for an ultrasound of testicles and I had a hydrocele of the right testicle. It took a number of weeks to resolve and I am still careful today not to aggravate it. so pain/nerve damage would be fairly common after colectomy. However, I would think that they are not in your pelvis during takedown. so am I thinking like Scott, that maybe you have an irritable pouch situation. I suffer... [ more ]

Questions about Metamucil and Imodium
xwaterice I was told the same. Compared to the previous surgeries this should have been the easiest one… which is true medically wise, but it was the biggest lie ever psychologically?! It’s not a matter of quantity of bowel movements and I know I was terribly lucky at the very start too. It’s the whole changing your life thing to me- 6 years without feeling anything down there, forgetting what an urge even was even, have been and still are devastating. I’ve been trying to be positive since day 1 but... [ more ]
New577 Keep the positive attitude and stay involved here. You will continue to learn and with time, you will be able to manage the pouch. you are not alone in your thinking. I was told how everything was going to be ok with this surgery, but if not for this web site, I would be lost. Almost everything I’ve learned has been from here. Yes I need my docs to manage my ongoing medical issues, but they just don’t know how to manage the daily challenges we all face. [ more ]
xwaterice Thanks so much guys! As always your replies are precious. I tried taking 3 Imodium tonight (sublingual) and despite having eaten veeery late I managed to sleep for 5 and a half hours straight; when I woke up the urge wasn’t even that bad, I could have gone back to sleep without a bathroom trip. Soothing an upset/irritated bowel
Kushami I’ve spoken to two doctors and a nurse, and it is known that it is a medication side effect. (The medication I tried causes GI upset in everyone who takes it, colon or no colon.) They and I are 100% sure it isn’t pouchitis or anything else specific to the pouch. It’s just a very unhappy bowel, as anyone’s bowel would be after gastro etc. :-( I think low residue is helping. The doctors and nurse say to “wait it out”, but I just thought folks here might have some insider tips. I didn’t need... [ more ]
PouchLogic If this is still ongoing you should be seen by a Dr. It could be pouchitis, it could be a part of your bowel is hung up on some scar tissue or any other number of things. Kushami Have you tried anything that might allow you to eat a wider range of foods, such as Metamucil? Also, with the foods you listed as your mainstays, are you vegetarian? The reason I ask is that lowering carbohydrate and increasing protein can be a good strategy (obviously depending on your doctor’s advice). Horrible gas pains- I think it’s gas?
Aimc Bubba, you didn't say exactly where the pain is, but could it be gallbladder? It's usually upper center to right sides of abdomen. Causes gas . Many of the same symptoms we have with everything else. The pain is like someone ctting with a knife. I use a heating pad. It helps but takes a bit of time. I'm just not wanting another surgery, even though that is probably going to happen. Anyway, just a thought. Hope you get some answers. Aimee [ more ]

Bubba1028 My takedown was in 2017, so I’m going on 6 years lost takedown. I think it was a partial obstruction or gas behind an adhesion. Pain
Scott F If the pain has been the same since the pouch was created 10 years ago, and persists even though the pouch isn’t being used (you wrote that you have a loop ileostomy), then it’s reasonable to believe that the pain may be related to the construction of the pouch (this could include adhesions that developed when the pouch was made). New577 I kinda go thru this periodically. in the beginning , I was pushing so hard I re-aggravated an old inguinal hernia repair. I also find that too much Imodium can cause too firm of a stool. Anyone with a j-pouch that practise fasting?
SeattleJane I don't know if it counts as "fasting", but I have been NPO for long stretches of time when I have a small bowel obstruction. If I don't have an IV going for fluid, which I didn't during the initial Covid outbreak when it was too dangerous to be in a hospital, I would sip super small amounts of clear liquid. No way could I dry fast. Liquid is the only thing that keeps me going. Clear water, broth and jello keeps me somewhat hydrated, an absolute necessity for organ and brain function. [ more ]
Scott F The evidence for the benefits of fasting is meager for people with colons, though the proponents of it exhibit serious religious fervor, and some of them write “books,” too. The risks of dry fasting for people without colons should be obvious. A failed attempt for a j-pouch and then many surgeries to get back his health gave Bill the motivation to create a web site dedicated to giving support to patients who have had or are considering j-pouch surgery.
