Exercise tips
ke353 I'll be seeing my surgeon next week, and usually the ostomy nurse stops in, so I'll be sure to ask! I just curious what has worked for others. Thanks Liz! [ more ]
liz11 ke.. can you go visit an ostomy nurse? You should be able to find a system/procedure that works consistently. There are so many different things to try that an ostomy nurse may come up with the best plan by seeing your situation. After you get that solved.. then yes of course swim, use the steam room, run, lift weights, do whatever the heck you want. I would suggest using either "sure seals" or coloplast brava elastic strips to help frame down the outside part of your wafer before swimming... [ more ]
Guest Use other things, when I had an ostomy for 3 months I didn't think about exercising with it. If you're having a ton of leaks now, you need to find a fix for that before you even think about exercising. You can still try getting away with bike rides, walking, etc. though. If you happen to live near a lake give that a try. I understand why you would want to stay away from pools. Every time I go running shirtless I 've thought many times, "how would I get away with this if I still had an ostomy?" [ more ]

abdomen on side of the stoma
n/a Bummer, Paul. I just read your blog and am sorry you're going through one thing after another of late. Hopefully this hernia repair will get you back in the saddle again soon. In the meanwhile, take it easy! P.S. What is it with these surgeons? I had the same issues with my original surgeon ... [ more ]
Former Member unfortunately I've determined its a hernia I suspect developed as a result of the swelling from a post surgical infection in January. Every time I approached my surgeon with "this doesn't seem to be normal" I was told not to worry and continued to work out as if nothing was wrong. Now I'm laying off, meeting with a couple of hernia specialists, and plan to get it repaired with yet another surgery, so I can get on with my life. [ more ]
Former Member About 4 years ago, I undergone intestinal surgery for an unfortunate car accident. Doctors said my small intestines had been damaged and food vitals couldn't get their routing. Now its fine to have non panic life. [ more ]

Former Member I had this too. So painful. I was told its one of the symtoms of crohns disease. My dr. also does alternative medicine. So he put me on a vitamin program. If you are interested I will ask him what it was. But, I got better within a very short time, and have never had it again. I am still taking vitamins, just can't remember the ones he started me on. Hope you feel better soon. I used crutches when I had this. They help. [ more ]

Pressure sore or boil right outside anus?
KDelphi BTW, for others, what I mean by "he doesnt want to see it" is that he does not wish to examine a woman....I am not making this up [ more ]
KDelphi The problem is that I cannot afford to see another dr. and the dr I can see just does not want to examine me in a digestive or sexual areas (?) at all...so I cannot trust his opinions..I guess I will have to drive the 5 hrs....thanks for replying....I wish I could see a good dr, but I simply cannot [ more ]
kathy smith You absolutely need to see someone. This is probably not something that can diagnosed over the internet. It doesn't matter whether the doctor does not wish to see your scars. And he can't 'see' your j-pouch unless a scope is performed. Please don't compromise your health. See someone immediately. Then that person can figure out if you need to drive to see your surgeon. (You should also private message Jan Dollar and run the symptoms by her.) kathy [ more ]

trying to figure out the whole changing the bag process
Randi M Bethie-Colleen is correct that the beginning is frustrating and a bit of trial and error. A good seal is very important in protecting the skin. I used the adapt rings and also found that the stoma would get a bit swallowed by them but it never blocked the output so if your daughter isn't having problems w output I wouldn't focus on that. The rings are designed to help absorb moisture which makes them puff up. I suggest you stretch the ring to the exact size of her stoma and place it on the... [ more ]
Colleen2001 Hi Bethie, Learning the process and technique of appliance changes can be confusing and frustrating. It sounds as if she has a bit of skin irritation, most likely due to output getting under the wafer. Does she have an end ileostomy or a loop? I find the end ileo to be much more manageable and easier to fit because it generally sticks out a bit further than the loop. First, you really need to make sure you are measuring the stoma before putting on a new wafer. I don't know how long it's been... [ more ]

Sore Ostomy and running
liz11 nope, never been sore or swollen that I noticed. But I have always worn clothing On another running note... be sure you HYDRATE... before, during, and after. [ more ]
Colleen2001 Thanks for the information ladies. I will definitely wear something tight over it as suggested. Liz, does your ileostomy ever feel sore or get swollen from running? I don't think I'll be running any half marathons anytime soon (good for you!), but definitely am trying to get back into shape after surgery. Thanks again! [ more ]
liz11 I have run 3half marathons with an ileostomy. I just wear TIGHT shorts that fully cover the ostomy. None of those fancy cute running shorts with little panties in them. I wear more like "boy shorts" varying lenghts depending on the weather. [ more ]
