need to find a GI Doctor in MPLS/St. Paul
ytcrockpot Hi, I would contact the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN and see if they could recommend a GI doc, since they are the ones that pioneered the j-pouch surgery and they are only approx 1-1/2hrs from Minneapolis. Im 39yrs with my pouch and live in Florida, I just contact the Mayo in Rochester to take a look at me since I’m experiencing similar issues. Good luck, hope you find someone [ more ]

I do have some issues and am about to write a post about it... but in response to what you said.. yes yes yes.. my life is 180% better than from when I was suffering from Ulcerative Colitis!!! Oh my goodness!!! Kangaroo I love reading positive experiences with j pouches! I am almost 3 years since take-down and my j pouch has been a success. I don't have any food restrictions, I am always able to pass gas easily and safely, and I have never had pouchitis. The only 2 issues I had were nighttime incontinence and hemorrhoids. I solved the nighttime incontinence with 2 Imodium before bed, and I have the hemorrhoids under control by taking a daily bath with special bath salts by Better Bath Better Body. [ more ]

Bubba1028 I think I just bought whatever was on the list of instructions. Maybe I’ll just use half the enema or whatever, argh. The doc said I could have a regular meal until dinner the day before so I did eat until 4 pm yesterday so I bet I still do have stuff left in there. They did say I could have water until 10am this morning since my procedure isn’t until 2pm. I’m only passing clear stuff at this moment so I think I’m good. [ more ]
CTBarrister If you did not cheat, you should be clear if you had only clear liquids after noon the day before the procedure and nothing by mouth after midnight the night before. My general rule is to do the last enema about 2 hours before the time I have to leave for the procedure. I implemented this rule due to years of experience with Fleet enemas and knowing when the last urge to vacate dribs and drabs will be. I tend to be a tad sensitive to the Fleet enemas in terms of sometimes cramping and having... [ more ]

Buttocks bleeding during period
skn69 I have a k pouch (and yes, I have been menopaused for years) but during my periods I would always bleed from my stoma...at first it seemed like a coincidence but as years went by, I realized that it was just a biological fact of life. A couple of questions
Scott F A sed rate of 45 is unlikely to be worth the anxiety you’ve already given it. The sed rate isn’t specific to any one thing. If it’s increasing significantly, or associated with symptoms of concern then it could be meaningful. It’s only cavalier if you’ve convinced yourself that it matters. One person’s “cavalier” is another person’s “reassuring.” [ more ]
Joey A When I asked the new GI about the elevated SED rate (45) , he said, "well, it's not 300." I just feel uneasy about his cavalier attitude. Thank you for the advise. [ more ]

Straining, 8 days post takedown
PouchLogic It should get better, you and your body will figure it out. I will suggest that planning to have a longer sit during your bm may help, just giving it time rather than straining. I know someone has posted on here concerns before about how long it takes sometimes. Hopefully you aren't already sitting for to long but I often take 20min, or longer especially before bed. Good luck [ more ]
Sammie1997 Thanks Scott, today was a lot better. No burning or straining. Only issue I'm having now is still getting use to my pouch filling. Gives me some awkward cramps that last a few minutes. Sad News about Dr. Adrian Greenstein
Mark Rufino I didn’t mean to worry you! I’m sure things are fine if you’ve felt fine. I do know that he did leave rectal tissue, so maybe he refined it over the years. I didn’t hear him say it, apparently he said it to my mother, Maybe he was just saying it to be very conservative. Anyway, no worries, don’t want this thread to have any trouble so it can stay a tribute to him. [ more ]
CTBarrister I have been told by my GIs that Gelernt left a small amount of rectal cuff and that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be done, for the reasons mentioned in your post. But the limited shelf life of a J Pouch stuff is really a worst case scenario as mentioned in my prior post. There is an old pouch thread on this board and there are many people here who are 30 years plus J Pouch patients. At 27 in J Pouch years I am not old compared to some on here. [ more ]
melissa111 No I got mine in 2012. I'm hoping if he said that, it was just because he didn't know how long it'd last then. One thing I think he and his son do different, is that they don't leave a rectal cuff of any sort. But maybe they did, back then. I don't know. You hear a lot on here about people having cuffitis because the little bit of rectal tissue that got left, gets inflamed and has to be treated. I heard other surgeons left up to a half inch of it. Bill Johnson founded the J-Pouch Group in 1997.

After a life long battle with Ulcerative colitis, Bill finally had his colon removed and was given an ostomy in 1993. A failed attempt for a j-pouch and then many surgeries to get back his health gave Bill the motivation to create a web site dedicated to giving support to patients who have had or are considering j-pouch surgery.
