permanent ileostomy problems--terrified to get the surgery
GraceB egk I also had ileostomy for 3 months before take down in 2010. I had so many problems with leaking. I had a few nurses trying all different type of bags. I even had the top ostomy nurse trying to help me get the right ostomy bag. Finally I called the company of the make of the ostomy bag. It took a few weeks for me to find the correct fit. The women that I spoke with was very helpful. She would send me supplies and explain how to use it. If that didn't work I would call her back and she... [ more ]

Former Member I had an end ileostomy for 6 months between step 1 and and 2 (I had 3 step), and I believe it was a great experience to have. It was so easy that I was considering not even getting a j-pouch at all. Now I have my j-pouch, I am not scared of going back to an ileostomy, if becomes necessary. When I had the loop, and it was such a nightmare. It was retracted into the skin, directly shooting down on the skin. I had to change on average everyday. One night I had to change three times, because it... [ more ]

Pouchitis are they Joking??
CTBarrister In the case of Remicade, that is essentially correct. You can't go on it and then off it. I have been on it for 5 years. There is also the chance that you can develop antibodies, although that hasn't happened in my case. But the reason you can't go off it is not because it's addictive like heroin and you go into withdrawal. If you go on and then off and then back on again, it's just likely not to be effective. Also, you need to take it for a while before the results are observed. At least 6... [ more ]

I had never heard that, and like I said, was using it for something else and it appears to be helping. I feel like most of the change is how my rectum feels. Former Member It is not up to your husband to decide whether you get a permanent stoma. He is not the one who is suffering. He is not a doctor. How can he be the one to decide on such an important health issue? I am sorry to say this, but it needs to be said. Surgery for blockage
jenners My advice is to go slower with getting to the solid foods than the hospital puts in front of you. I have had 3 surgeries (j pouch, reverse ostomy, emergency resection) and headed into a 4th (stricture at top of jpouch). They always do like clear fluids, then full fluids than solid foods. Not pouchitis, nightly severe incontinence
clouwho2 Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. I’ll run some of these by my doctor And try some on my own (those I can do without contacting a dr first). I’ve been on flagyl during my previous 3 pregnancies. I had some success with flagyl and amoxicillin surprisingly. Scott F When one antibiotic alone stopped working for me, adding a second one did the trick. Possible Blockage
Former Member Do you think your constipated??? [ more ]
Scott F If I suspected a blockage I wouldn’t take laxatives. They have the potential to increase pressure in an already overstretched gut. The blockages J-pouchers get aren’t usually from hardened stool, so approaches designed to soften stool generally won’t help. I’d only go to the ER if I needed hydration or if it were starting to look like I might need surgery to clear a complete small bowel obstruction. [ more ]

Efficacy of Antibiotics waning
milo I am afraid of antibiotics. I know they are very bad for a person, however, I need them for when I get pouchitis, so Cipro works great for me. This could be because I now, after 8 years of suffering on a near-daily basis, have found what works best for my body and I only have to use it a couple of times a year or so. The first 8 years with my pouch was a nightmare. I thought I would never be well. I eat only the very most strict of diets. But, I found I needed to experiment or die. I now eat... [ more ]

Not sure if this is pouchitis or not
SteveG It's difficult to jugde from your symptoms what's bugging you. Yellow / light colourd stool may be a sign of bile fluid missing, and fatty stool can be very aggressive. That would explain the problems with the hash browns, they are quite fatty. Perhaps you should have checked that there are no gallstones or an obstruction of the biliary tract, but that's just a guess. On the other hand eating bitter stuff can stimulate the digestion juices. DG78 Hi Banditgurl, I don't see how a 5 mm stone could cause a bowel blockage. Even if a fistula formed between the urinary tract and bowel and allowed to stone to pass into your intestines, a 5 mm stone would not be large enough to cause a blockage in the bowel, unless you had constrictions that caused the opening to be less than 5 mm. It would possibly get stuck in one of the catheter openings though! I highly doubt the two are related. Good luck to you. Debbie [ more ]

Pain from scar tissue during pregnancy
