Abdominal cramping, back ache, hard to go! Help!
Solomin Hi SloanNYC, I have very similar symptoms; my back hurts, my hip hurts, My leg is numb and I have difficulty with BM's. I had an MRI done and it appears that I have pinched nerve. I still say the pain is connected to my bowel issues. I am doing therapy (chiropractor) and it is helping a little. Also taking Lyrica. Please let me know how things develop. Maybe an MRI would be beneficial. Good luck! Solomin [ more ]
SloanNYC Went to Gastro -- checking bloods for infection. I have major pain in hip, lower/mid back and some pain in upper left leg. Icing the area and PT seem to help for short periods of time (few hours or less). Going to the bathroom once a day now and straining. If there is no infection and I continue to have this pain, could backpain/hip flexor strain be so bad that it would impact intestines/stomach? [ more ]

Guest Tracy this problem isn't "stupid" as much as it's annoying. I understand what you're going through. About the only time I've been able to pass gas while standing on 2 legs has been by accident, such as when I'm really active. In those rare cases the gas is released without me even trying to pass gas. Otherwise, the best you can do is try to keep away from foods that produce gas. I understand how that's like walking thru a minefield too when you have a J Pouch. I'm sorry if you've heard that... [ more ]

Fluid build up post op
liz11 rachey. seems like that might be something your surgeon should check out. Any fluid buildup like that could be infectious. I had fluid buildups and abscesses draining and more abscesses bursting after my last surgery. It was so serious they got an infectious disease doctor involved. Just sayin.. might be something your surgeon should take a look at. [ more ]

Who has had a valve revision?
vanessavy Everyone guesses it is scar tissue. I have a "speed bump" I call it at the entrance of my stoma so I think that is scar tissue for sure. It also feels like my stoma is a suction cup around my catheter at times, like it shrunk, no idea what to do for that, stretching it or leaving a stent in doesn't work anymore, i just had my 2nd pouch scope yesterday in 3 months and the valve is good just on an angle. CTBarrister Cataja, I am not really sure which area of the ileum is getting inflamed so as to cause these twice yearly obstructions, but my recent MRI Enterography discovered a segmental thickening and narrowing of my ileum just above the J Pouch - suspected, but unproven Crohn's. Former Member I still have a rectal stump left. I originally thought that I was going to have a "barbie butt", but when I came out of surgery, my doctor informed me that he did not remove the stump. He said in his opinion it would have done more harm than good to me (I had surgeries on that area when I was a baby and have scar tissue). liz11 ke.. can you go visit an ostomy nurse? You should be able to find a system/procedure that works consistently. There are so many different things to try that an ostomy nurse may come up with the best plan by seeing your situation. Guest Use other things, when I had an ostomy for 3 months I didn't think about exercising with it. If you're having a ton of leaks now, you need to find a fix for that before you even think about exercising. You can still try getting away with bike rides, walking, etc. though. If you happen to live near a lake give that a try. I understand why you would want to stay away from pools. CTBarrister The best thing you can do with a blueberry, and I mean the absolute best, is put them in pancakes. Then you have blueberry pancakes, which are the pancakes of Kings, and Queens. suebear Colleges and Universities do a pretty good job of getting this information out to students. Chances are your daughter had information about the OSD on her campus but either forgot, or didn't take the time to read the information on all the services available to students. It's really not your doctor's job to point your daughter in the direction of help, outside of his/her purview. I work with college age children and am often amazed at how uninformed they are as compared to the independence... [ more ]
Bethie FYI - I just contacted the school and I can't believe we did not do this last year!! My daughter would have had less worries had that happened - that being said it seems to be a relatively easy process. I wish doctors who have college students were more aware of this and could encourage their patients to take advantage of it. I know we will be giving her gastro the information to help his other patients with this. Thanks to all for the information - her school has an online form that gets... [ more ]
Kelsie I'd also like to add that my daughter and I are very open about her condition. We personally feel that if instructors know exactly what she is going through they tend to be more accommodating and go above and beyond what is legally required of them. We also realize this is a very personal decision and your privacy is your right. That being said, she has NEVER come across anyone who has ridiculed her or treated her poorly in any way because they knew her health conditions. We feel it is to... [ more ]

Sacral Nerve Implant
hever Thanks JJA, but as I've already tried to thicken bms on numerous occasions with no result I don't think I'd try to go that route of implanting the device, I'm probably being a coward, but the thought of all that pain, still not completely resolved has put me off anymore procedures,at least for now, also I'm pretty sure more of the previous implants are trying to eject from the muscle as the pain and bleeding has been quite intense. Thanks for your input, I suspected bms had to be quite firm... [ more ]
JJA I got an implant last spring also. It will not help for liquid stool. You need at minimum a soft stool for it to make a difference-our objective was to thicken stool as much as possible with copious amounts of metamucil, immodium, codeine (I used to take paragoric liquid, but became taste aersie to it), oatmeal for breakfast, etc (I take 9 capsules of metamuscil, 2 immodium, and 1 30mg codeine, 3-4 times daily, usually before meals). I went from 2-3 major accidents/day to 1 minor accident... [ more ]
hever I was taking a similar product, it was in a glass bottle, but had to take nearly the whole thing before it made any difference, then it only lasted a little while, tasted revolting too!! Back to the specialist, more cost, get nowhere!! I just really can't take another trial after all the pain I've had since Jan 09, as all the implants broke up in the anal sphincter, some rejected, broke thru the bowel wall causing an erosion and rectal pockets to form, some were removed, some have migrated... Jeff P. Thank you for the update. It is helpful to hear success stories and see your full experience! I'm sure many of us are like me, recovering from the take down and dealing with frequent bathroom trips and it's good to know that everything gets better with time. [ more ]

Bill Johnson founded the J-Pouch Group in 1997.

After a life long battle with Ulcerative colitis, Bill finally had his colon removed and was given an ostomy in 1993. A failed attempt for a j-pouch and then many surgeries to get back his health gave Bill the motivation to create a web site dedicated to giving support to patients who have had or are considering j-pouch surgery.
