Stoma/intestine swelling?
Jasmine 2 When you have your catheter left in...be careful. I wouldn't go bike riding or anything stenuous, you are trying to rest the area. You don't want to irritate or do any damage in the valve or pouch. [ more ]
Jasmine 2 Eric, I use a strip of guaze and wrap it around my hips and tape it in about 3 areas on my hips to keep it level with the stoma. Then I tie the guaze to the catheter, I bend the catheter so the end is held in place by the gauze...in a U shape. I use a golf tee or dowel to block the end of the catheter so it doesn't leak, and can be removed to empty my pouch. I have no trouble keeping the catheter in this way. Your valve being closed tight and harder to get the catheter in later in the day,... [ more ]
vanessavy Welcome to my daily hell as I call it. Your story is me every time I intubate. Tight stoma, my valve is on an angle. To keep the tube in it is simple. You have to form a loop like a ribbon, think cancer ribbon, the loop goes under the tube and then the ends go over and secure to the skin that prevents it being forced out. then secure another piece of tape over it. Sore rectum
Former Member Sorry I haven't replied lately, I just started a new semester and I have been crazy busy. I haven't seen a doctor yet because as an international student I have limited amount of time I can miss class or I risk losing my status in the country. I have been trying to get an appointment after class but they close at 5PM. I have only had one really bad day, the rest moderate, but the last day or two it's been more or less normal, but I know from experience that it doesn't mean the inflammation,... [ more ]
vanessavy Cipro works ok for me but I take a stronger one that is the best called Omnicef, not sure what the generic name is. I love this antibiotic and it is a favorite at the BCIR program ostomy nurses. I don't get pouchitis, I get small intestine bacteria overgrowth that re occurs [ more ]
JJA My most common pouchitis symptoms are rectal pressure, increased urgency, and nighttime leaks/accidents. If the rectal area is bleeding, and feels more inflamed/painful vs just rectal pressure, I'd consider possible cuffitis. [ more ]

guys can you help me find some joy please?
Onwisconsin Pre-takedown was maybe the worst time of my life. I'm assuming you have an ostomy and external pouch. I just couldn't stand it. My seal broke ALL the time. I couldn't work because my stomach was always awash in acid. I cried often because I felt useless and I worried the pain and inability to work would never end. You're not alone. Those 2 months were awful for me. It got a lot better right at the end. Suddenly my seal wasn't breaking, I had a routine and knew when to set my alarm once... [ more ]

Home after Takedown Surgery!
TE Marie Congratulations! It's great to hear about a good surgery and recovery! I hope you have a continued smooth boring recovery [ more ]
Srf1 Thanks Marianne, I had a decent night last night. No leakage at all which I think might have been brought on in the hospital from being so groggy from the pain meds. I've noticed something...
Srf1 I truly believe that your personal outlook has a huge effect on how you adapt to your new J pouch. The "Is your glass half full or half empty" sort of thing. If you think positive and stay optomistic you're going to do yourself a lot more good in the healing process than if you are being constantly consumed by worry, stress and anxiety. [ more ]
vanessavy I am the same way. I tried that awful VSL and I swore it worked but I was on an antibiotic the same time, tried to transition. 2 weeks into that and Align I had horrible bacteria infections that I had to go back on Omnicef (best antibiotic I use) to be back to my new "normal". Probiotics MESS me up big time. And my stool never smells but on probiotics I swear my whole house smelled like a sewer line exploded. [ more ]
Epic Scotsman fq: The only thing that has ever really wonked things up for me is probiotics. I've tried them on 2 separate occasions and each time I've gone on a round of antibiotics to kill them off again. I know I could just wait it out until the effects wear off, but I'm impatient. CTBarrister I am not sure exactly what the concern is that underlies this thread. Football players and hockey players have had their spleens ruptured during games. jan need to inquire about saccharomyces boulardi
Spooky With probiotics in general, I also try not to get sucked into paying for a brand. What I look for are studies which prove how much actually survives stomach acid. Most of the higher quality probiotics will have that information listed, and they're not always even the most expensive. But it's amazing how many probiotics are on the market which don't even include that information one way or another, even brand names. So those are the ones I avoid. [ more ]
Jan Dollar So true. I do know that most of the studies that are done are on specific strains, so brands can matter. But, there just is not a lot of controlled research in regard to all the probiotics out there. Diet
FrustratedButFighting Okay since you all were so helpful with my last post- I have yet another question. I have seen on several sites that with an ileostomy you can have cereal as long as it is refined cereal. What the heck cereals classify as "refined"?! I know with all the attention being on whole grains that's all I see on the cereal boxes. Any advice or do any of you know of any refined cereals or other cereals that have been "safe" for any of you to eat without issue? Thanks again in advance! [ more ]
CeeeeCeeee Guess I was lucky. After severely limiting my diet while in the throes of UC, I was able to eat/drink everything during the year I had my ileostomy.....everything! Nice Nurse If I've learned anything it's that everyone is different and nothing works all the time. That being said...whole grains are not all that healthy. CTBarrister Fluconazole should knock out that yeast infection in a week or two. Too bad you let it go that long. Prostate exam
Roy Prostrate exams can be a chore. Because I have some scaring in that area, when the Dr. trys to do a digital exam its been hard to acually feel the prostrate. It was decided that I would need a Prostate biopsy due to elevated PSA. It's fairly simple and was done as out-patient. There is some pain. Kline84 Thanks for the replays! Well the burning pretty much went away with the use of preparation H and bland thickening foods like bananas so maybe something I ate had a little more pepper in in than usual. Still having the uncomfortable irritated but not painful feeling every now and then. Seems like it happens when it's really hot out and I'm sweating a lot. Other than that the preparation h makes everything pretty comfortable. Thinking I may have a fissure though cause some of the bowel... [ more ]
notsotough I had a very similar set of symptoms- the throbbing type pain. It also improved on sitting or lying very still. Eventually a stricture was diagnosed and after dilatation I really felt much more comfortable. I still had pouchitis but the discomfort was very different and never throbbed. The first examining doctor said it felt fine but the second said it was tight and crucially the examiantion provoked the same type of pain - examination is obviously never particularly comfortable but think... Holy Shart!
Blake D. Thanks guys for the advice. I ate half a bowl of tomato soup, a can of tuna (yuck), a little bit of a chicken breast, and a Greek yogurt today. I did not have many problems. Still have gas pains and sharts, but decreasing in frequency thank God! Don't want to ruin all my underwear. [ more ]
liz11 might want to avoid so much sugar as sometimes causes lots of gas/bloating - like the pudding cups. for protein - scrambled eggs, greek yogurt, plain white cooked chicken, cheese, peanut butter [ more ]
mgmt10 I couldn't eat tomato sauce for a couple of months...maybe longer. It killed me. I'm fine with it now. You really have to take it easy with food right now. I know it's tough when you're hungry but otherwise you will pay dearly as you just found out! Hang in there...it gets better. [ more ]

what would you do? another surgeon for takedown?
vstRN I would definitely switch surgeons and move. Although takedown is the easiest of surgeries, it (at least for me) can be very emotionally taxing. Family support would be a huge advantage during this time. Good luck with your decision! [ more ]
JWMIII Hi Chasingtime...I agree with Suebear that if you want another surgeon, ask the Cleveland Clinic in Florida to provide a recommendation. They have a good network of colorectal surgeons who were either Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic trained. I am from Philadelphia but had to go to the Cleveland Clinic in Florida (Dr. Wexner or as the nurses call him...God) for my colectomy, J-Pouch and takedown. They had recommendations for me at Temple and UPenn here in Philly for any emergency follow-ups,... [ more ]

Hemroids?
Brian E. Thanks so much! I will hook those things up. Greatly appreciated! Take care. [ more ]
Jpouch8888 Hey Brian, If I were in your shoes, I would start using Charmin Wet Wipes instead of TP. I assume the hotel TP is not very soft. Also, take hot baths and very gently massage the area that is bothering you, if tolerable. Whenever I have Butt Burn this helps, so hopefully it could help with your hemorrhoids. Also, I would take a little bit of laxative (milk of magnesia) so things come out liquidy for easier passing. You may also want to go on clear liquids for a day so your bowel movements... [ more ]

Naltrexone?
jeane Pouchmonkey, I am very interested in this and if you do start the low dose, please report back your findings. I would much prefer to take a low dose of this med than 875 mg X 2 of augmentin daily like I have been on for the last 15 months non-stop. I will ask my GI about this at my next appointment. [ more ]
pouchmonkey My chiro recommended it specifically because he has other pt's who have used it for auto-immune issues & have done extremely well with it. I have read the online info that notes that it is used for opioid addiction, but that's at 50mg, not the 4.5 mg dose. The pt's he has that have been using it have MS, UC, & Crohn's. My GI (who I have not spoken with yet about LDN, I wanted to finish out my cycle of Flagyl & Canasa first) pretty well told me that pouchitis, or mine specifically... [ more ]
tatunbaba Nice thread. Looked for Naltrexone and yeah it a drug to treat opeoid drug addicts. LND or low dose Naltrexone is being tried in variety of deases. Check the link http://www.lowdosenaltrexone.org/ But I see they used it for Crohn's. 1.75 to 4.5mg/day (abt 50mg/day is for heroin dependence therapey) What About effect on UC? Anyone? [ more ]

Have you ever wondered what the hot topics colorectal surgeons like to discuss?
TE Marie I've read and saved many articles and had not come across this one. Thanks for posting it. [ more ]
Subzeromambo The study was based on people being treated for anxiety and/or depression before surgery but I still think your point is valid. Fighting pain tires the immune system and opens us up to more problems. Had a bizarre blockage on Monday and I had not even had anything to eat. Blockage has passed but the pain is still there. I am trying not to be down but it is hard. [ more ]
skn69 There have been similar studies on pain...anxious or depressed people complain more of chronic post op or post surgical pain...which leads me to believe that pain causes depression and anxiety and so does pouchitis! Sharon [ more ]

Guest thank you guys so much. i will definitely walk because i dont like being inside to much. makes me feel trapped. the loop ileo is making me feel trapped as well. way worst than the end ileo. the bladder and butt side effects came on day 2 of celexa so i dont think ill need to wean but thanks for the advice. i agree and also do not like or feel good on meds. its been that way forever... [ more ]
TE Marie Please call your doctor or pharmicist about how to wean off of it. I've tried antidepressants before that gave me side effects too. If you want to try something else there are many others out there. Maybe once you quit taking it you will decide you don't need anything. [ more ]
skn69 Chasingtime, The only non-medicinal remedy that I have ever found that helped me (I don't, personally, like meds and don't like what I feel like on them) so I use exercise to control my moods and feelings post op..since I can't run anymore (never really could) I walk miles with an MP3 full of music that I have collected and that makes me feel good...I walk about an hour a day, most days, and it does wonders, I feel stronger, more at peace and it tires me out sufficiently to help me sleep...
