Persistent Sinus Tract Wound
JaniceM Oh, it was called a fistulagram. Even though they did not suspect a fistula, the surgeon wanted to be sure what was going on. It was a tiny needle the tech inserted very very gently, just enough to get the tip in. I still have my spincter muscles so squeezed them to keep it in (plus he taped it cuz he knew the opening was so small and not deep) through the 5 minute test. [ more ]
Former Member Thanks Janice ! I see my doctor today & will def'ly ask for an X-ray and go from there. Even though I'd never wish these problems on anyone, it is reassuring to know I'm not alone. I may be picking your brain a tad more after I see him :-) Thanks again, Ali [ more ]
JaniceM Ask away, sure! The 2nd time, they put a balloon type them to keep a tiny bit opened while it healed. It never closed up completely even though you could barely put the tip of a q tip in it. This last time, the colorectal surgeon cleared it out and no balloon. But, it took time to heal as I was older with more health issues. But, once it did, I was so happy. No more pain or discharge. If the surgeon completely redos it, it can take several weeks to fully heal. But each week so much better. [ more ]

Pouchitis AND irritable pouch syndrome
Jan Dollar Yes, same Rx as IBS. The antidepressants are not for depression, as typically, subclinical doses are used. The idea is that they alter your "gut awareness" so that you do not sense every twinge that goes on. My understanding is that the tricyclic antidepressants (like Elavil) are used for IPS/IBS, not SSRIs. Could be wrong though. Also, antispasmodics are used to reduced the cramping pain. Jan [ more ]

2 vs. 3 surgeries for J-Pouch
Scott F Your plan makes sense to me. Choosing the right surgeon is very, very important. [ more ]
UCWarrior2010 It seems like there are good reasons to get a 2 or 3 step surgery. A 1 step procedure is just not an option in my case. I guess I will choose the surgeon that I feel most comfortable with taking into account his experience with the jpouch and whether I can afford him. Once again, thank you for your inputs. I truly appreciate it. [ more ]
KiwiPoucher I had the one step procedure, but becuase I developed sepsis (which can be the case in any surgery) I then have to have 2 further sugeries, a temp-ileo and takedown. If I had to make the decision today, I would definately still go for the one step, because I can see that although it is a huge operation your new plumbing starts adapting from day one. If I hadn't had complications I would be 3 months further on now with my recovery. I am also getting obstructions around the ileostomy site... [ more ]

Lest We Forget......
mad hatter You are not alone in feeling sorry for your self as it has a place in the healing process. I gave up so much of my freedom and career because of UC. Three years after getting my J-pouch Im still trying to find a happy medium. fistula or no fistula that is the question
lixxie Hi NJK, I had a similar story earlier this year, only my symptoms were not 'monthly'. Had fistula-like symptoms, but EUA found nothing. Surgeon dismissed it as he couldn't see anything. Told me to come back if I have any more problems. Ultimately, the symptoms have settled down to be light-to-non-existent, and because my pouch is pretty well functioning, I'm going to leave it be as a very minor inconvenience. From what I've read (and I could be wrong) there does not seem to be much in the... [ more ]
n/a NJK, so sorry to hear you're experiencing these symptoms. SF is right - passing gas and possibly stool from the vagina is NOT normal. Interesting that yours occurs only after your period. I don't know what that would mean. Fistulas are sneaky and often cannot be seen on scope. They will better show up on an MRI. Even Dr. Shen had to work hard to find the opening inside me (but find it he did). I'm glad to hear you will be seeing him. He will do everything in his power to help you. Long story... [ more ]
Sierran Farmer NJK, in my own experience, fistulas sometimes open up a tiny bit and can mostly remain closed until something causes the need for another escape route for stool. If you have any particular pressure between your pouch and your rectum, such as from bearing down or from some measure of constipation (relative) that differs from normal consistency, it might cause a fistula that's present but not normally needed to open a bit more such that you have the symptoms you describe. At your period, you... [ more ]

rachelraven Thanks. I'm still worried. I'm worried, what if the anal area turned "cancerous?" I know that it's probably not, and that I'm likely overreacting, but with the anal cuff left, I guess there's always that chance. The one doc told me not to think that way, that he really feels it's an early-on abscess. But I hope we can sort of sort it out. update with dr shen and B/O
Kelsie I am not sure how common it is. Yes, she used one in the morning and one at night for the most part. I asked about it being a possible cause of her headaches/nausea/vomiting and never got a response. We just decided to stop them and see, and it all went away, so one can only assume it was the cause. Kelsie My daughter used them for anal pain. They helped. However, a week or so after starting them she developed really bad headaches and nausea/vomiting every day. She went through that for over a month before we suspected the B&O. She stopped using them and after a week or so her headaches and nausea/vomiting were pretty much gone. Upcoming surgery: Advice
Former Member Thanks Sharon, Jeff and Liz. These are all great ideas I've had my fair share of operations (all unrelated to UC) so I don't have much anxiety about the actual operation. Although who knows how I will feel when I'm actually there waiting for the procedure to take place. If I begin to feel anxious I'll be sure to ask for something. Takedown Tomorrow!!
CTBarrister I had two ER visits after takedown and both were caused by my own stupidity. At the 30 day anniversary after takedown I was feeling good. I was on a "high sodium diet", this due to the Pouch's slow ability to adjust to electrolyte regulatory function previously performed by the excised colon. Jan Dollar Very good resource, Tom, with lots of detailed hints, most of which have been recommended here. Nice to have it all in one place, too. Just one word of caution, though. Bowel training is intended for those with some colon or rectum still, not for someone with a total proctocolectomy (note it is for cancer patients, not UC). Soreness, no pain
Jan Dollar If you have no other symptoms, I would not worry about it unless it persists a month or more or becomes severely painful. Could be anything from a pulled muscle, a torn adhesion, or even a virus attacking a nerve. If it was fibromyalgia, you'd have painful spots in numerous places. I think you'll have to see whether this resolves with time, persists, gets worse, or new symptoms develop. antibiotics/extra frequent pouching
Jan Dollar Yeah, Macrobid is an antibiotic, in that it kills bacteria internally, but it is only active in the urinary tract, so is often classified as a urinary antiseptic. I guess it is an old term, and I am dating myself...LOL Jan [ more ]
Sierran Farmer Thanks for the link, Jan, and for info on Macrobid. My gut flora seems to be returning, so the Macrobid must be working as you described, although in the link, it's not listed as an antiseptic but as an antibiotic. The UTI still may be present, so I'm upping fluid and getting a cranberry supplement. It's been so hard to stay hydrated: I sluice waste through my ileo, and only recently started on sodium bicarb after seeing a nephrologist. That's helped with diarrhea. I take heavy doses of the... Jan Dollar Macrobid, a urinary antiseptic, is supposed to act only in the urinary tract, because the kidneys concentrate it there. It is not supposed to alter colon bacteria, I guess becauseit is absorbed before it gets there. Still, it can cause C. diff infections in some people. But, with no colon, maybe your risk of gut flora effect may be higher. I couldn't find much in the way of info about probiotics with Macrobid, but I would think it should be fine to take with it, just space it out from the... [ more ]

FaithnWill Considering how many surgeries I had and all of the complications...I am doing better. I thought for sure I wasn't going to make it after takedown or have any quality of life. Well, my quality has improved. I am still working towards a better result, but I have improved. There is hope and light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you. [ more ]

Blake D. Hey 1970, I remember you because we had our takedowns about the same time, mine was August 21st. You pretty much described my day. I'm very happy so far. I have the same problems as you with leakage and that is probably my biggest annoyance, but considering where I was with UC, I'll gladly take it. My wife talked me into wearing pads to bed, which has really helped with the leakage problem and saves the underwear. I don't leak a lot, maybe a little spot here and there once out of every 3 or... raven68red 10 years post take down. What I have found is that it has everything to do with what I eat, how much I eat, and what time of day it is. I also don't go for several hours after waking, but my stomach is empty. I'm not much of a breakfast person so I usually grab a slimfast shake on the way out the door. Then if I have lunch, I can expect to go to the bathroom within a few hours. Since I eat so little at the start of the day, I eat in the evening and therefore the increase of bathroom trips... Anal Burning
Solomin Hi Moira, Which hospital are you associated with? I lived in Toronto for almost 10 years and know all the doctors there. One thing that might help immensely is nefedine based solution cream. One of the causes that aggravates butt burn is spasms of the sphincter. Nefedepine based creams stops these spasms, thereby providing a chance for the area to heal. If you use it in conjunction with a barrier, it should be of great assistance. Feel free to private message me if you like. Solomin [ more ]
Moira Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for all of your ideas and feedback. I've been trying various solutions and have little success thus far. Just saw my surgeon today and am waiting for an appointment for a scope to see what is going on. The pain has only been increasing and now also feels like possible cuffitis. Reminds me of the days when my UC was very bad. I feel raw and tender inside and am passing lots of blood. Hoping some solutions and answers will come soon. Thanks again, Moira [ more ]

The dreaded butt burn
Scott F I found Calmoseptine too intense, and successfully used Zinc Oxide and then Ferguson Formula (from Jamark) in the months after surgery. I liked the Ferguson Formula best. I also found Tucks witch hazel pads helpful occasionally. For me, at least, the need slowly diminished and went away completely after a few years. [ more ]
