Hi,

I am booking a vacation and was wondering if Ziplining is OK.

I never did it before. I had an open incision back in 2006. Then a few years later I had an incesional hernia. I am fine now. My concern is that the Ziplining may pull me abruptly and pull my ab muscles causing a hernia. Any thoughts? Am I over reacting?

I ziplined several times before UC and surgery. I can't remember it being particularly bad on the abdominals. The ziplines I've done are lower body harness....which position your body like you are sitting in a chair. When you "take off" you typically step off of some type of platform. Instead of stepping off and having your body drop down, you can instead lower your body down (so that your support rope is tight) then step off the platform so that it's a smooth transition. When you come to a stop either the zipline is set up to slow you down and the instructor catches you, or you put your gloved hand behind you on the line to cause friction and a slow down. It's like sticking your arms up when you are in a chair.
Echoing the encouragement of others: the J-pouch really causes no particular limitations. I get bounced off the floor repeatedly in Ju-jitsu, and my joints are much more of an issue than my abdomen. I do use the bathroom before training, since the sudden increase in pressure can cause an unwelcome surprise. If you have specific, personal limitations you may have to respect them, but that's really it.
