A loop has more chance to be constricted.  Think of a straw that liquid comes out the end, versus coming out a cut in the middle.  I had a loop after step 2 for a few months and I was in agony for a while because it got constricted.  It cleared up on takedown.  I can't think of a reason for a loop unless it is in the middle of surgeries.

"An end ileostomy is made when part of your large bowel (colon) is removed (or simply needs to rest) and the end of your small bowel is brought to the surface of the abdomen to form a stoma. ... In a loop ileostomy, a loop of the small bowel is lifted above skin level and held in place with a stoma rod."

Loops seem to be more messy and have more what I call acid. Burns alot more.

I can have a leak with my end ileo and it will not burn my skin. If I leave it long enough it will burn it but I don't.

Loops are just notoriously more difficult. I've had both and an end ileo is nothing like a loop. I remember the loop and burns. You never forget it.

I got multiple blockages because of my loop, did you too???

Yes I had blockages constantly so she took it down because I eventually ended up with a twisted bowel. That one hurt. Bad. She hooked my pouch up early. Which ended up being more problems. Not blockages.

But the loop. For the short time I had it. Was terrible.

Yeah, I had multiple blockages too because they said I had a thick, muscular stomach. You must have had the same thing.

My end ilestomy was fairly round and even, so it was easier to get a good fit and seal with the appliance.  The loop was unevenly shaped, because it is folded over, and I had horrid time with  leakage.

The end ileostomy is further down , so you have more intestine to process the output, so it may be a little less watery and acidic.

Loop ileostomies are more likely to prolapse.  Grateful this did not happen to me.

I forgot to ask, when you had the loop ileostomy, did she ever take you back to surgery to try to open up the loop, to fix the blockage problem? When I was having blockages with my loop, my surgeon took me back to surgery to open up the stoma hole more. It worked for under a day and then I went back to having blockages again.

You explained that perfectly

Mine ended up being a twisted bowl after several blockages.

I was in extreme pain for 14 hours while they dug around into my stoma trying to figure it out.  I never had pain so intense. I will never forget it.

She finally decided I needed surgery.  She saw that took down the loop and hooked my pouch up.

End of that part of my journey. But the beginning of another.

How in the world did you get a twisted bowel? Seems like the surgeon did the J-pouch wrong.

It just happened.

I do not blame my surgeon for anything.

She was very competent and had a good teacher and fellow surgeons with many years of experience.

It just happened.

Remember. It was a temporary ileo.  They go sideways in all kinds of directions.

I had a good surgeon.  She put up with me and if someone can do that it's a feat in itself. (ask my wife lol) Cause I'm a pain.

I cannot believe that happened! And the fact that it caused your blocakages too, you must have been depressing and painful. And hahaa, I do not think you are a pain- you are an IBD Warrior, You have been through a lot and you are still making it. You are a joy not a pain.
