I cannot answer your question because I had problems but if you are problem free you will find answers from many people with their experiences.
I would like to hear them myself.
I have heard some go straight to a pouch.. No bag. I only had a bag for three weeks and they hooked me up. Like I said probs cropped up and they had to do it.
Mine took a long nine months.. I was hooked up but could not work.
I had surgery in September 13..was hoping and shooting for February of 14..and probably would have made it completely by then but problems cropped up.
I know it's no help.
I wish you all the luck in the world.
I know one thing.. When they work right it's great.

I had my takedown on July 31 and I went back to work on August 19. I was in the hospital for four days and I had no complications. I needed to use the bathroom one or two times during the workday but it wasn't urgent.

That said, make sure you will have the option of withdrawing from school without penalty if you need to. If you do have complications or a rough adaptation period (which many do... I was lucky), you might not be ready to start. Make sure you won't be losing out on a lot of tuition money or anything like that.

I had mine done in a 3 step procedure. My first surgery done October 30, 2013, next January 28 and my take down April 25th this year. So I have had my working j-pouch for just about 2 1/2 months. I have not had any complications from the surgery, thankfully. My surgeon said I could return to school in August and right now I have no restrictions with exercise or working. I think it varies by every person and how they are doing. I use the bathroom about 8 times a day without any medications. I also have no urgency, so that helps a lot.
