I'm asking for a friend. She had a colectomy done last year. She doesn't have a J-Pouch but just her small intestine connected to her left over rectum. She was a Crohn's patient.

She often tells me that she has watery diarrha and that her rectum is burning. Her GI forbid immodium. What can she take so her stools firm up a little?

Thanks

It's a shame that imodium is out of the question as it is one of the few things that has helped me firm up my own stool. Given her situation, monitoring diet and identifying foods that have a positive or negative impact on diarrhea symptoms is appropriate.

With respect to lomotil, it may slow things down, but it may not be helpful in firming up stool. In my case, I avoid taking it because it makes my stool much less firm and me more prone to leaking.

In the interim, a bidet will help alleviate some of her discomfort.

Do you have any idea why her GI forbids Imodium? Ileo-rectal connections usually don't have good results, especially in adults. It seems odd that her GI doesn't want her taking bowel-slowers.

I think if this was me, I'd be seeking a new GI or at least be getting another opinion.

Regarding slowing and thickening - Metamucil Wafers really helped me. Or if she tries the powder instead of the wafers, she should use less water than recommended. For the butt burn, she should try Ilex. It generally doesn't let anything through and is the king of skin protectant products.

I hope she finds relief soon.
