I am do for my yearly pouch test. No problems...but surgeon moved to Israel. So cannot fond a GI doc who knows about j pouch! and colorectal surgeons say go to GI? So what kind of doctor do you use for regular pouch follow up.
I see my GI. If he needs to, he confers with my surgeon. Once they do a scope or two on you, then they are familiar with your j-pouch. I would think that any trained GI should be able to learn from his patients and do a little reading!
Ask your GI to help you find a GI that is familiar with j-pouches. Can you contact the University hospital in Alabama and ask for referrals? I'm not familiar with your state but would think any larger metropolitan area would have GI's familiar with j-pouches, like Birmingham or Huntsville? My daughter lives in AL and she is an hour plus away from Atlanta, GA too. It all depends on what your insurance covers. Maybe your insurance company could help you locate a GI close to you that does pouch scopes.
Definitely a GI. My surgeon does old school straight scopes with no medication or biopsies, instead of flex scopes. I suggest if you ever go to a surgeon for one that you make sure she/he is going to do a flex scope.
I go to my surgeon only because he told me to keep coming to him for scopes. If and when he gives me the boot then I'll go to my GI who happens to be familiar with j pouches.
