Hi all,

I have been using this website for info for a few years now, and find it very helpful indeed, after takedown in 2004 in Canada, have recently moved back to England to be close to my aging and very sick Dad, so to put it mildly, times are hard for me here, am attempting to claim some kind of disability,I am constantly being asked "What is your condition" well what is my condition?, I dont have UC any more as I do not have a colon, what would an accepted medical termonology be to my condition ? I doubt very much, people here in England would undestand "I am a J Poucher".
Can anyone tell me, as to what to tell the layman, in medical terms.

Hi Stephen,
I would just put the technical name for the actual procedure. I don't know where you had surgery, or exactly what you had done to have your pouch created (differing "techniques" will have different names), but for me it is considered a Mucosal Proctectomy with Ileoanal Anastomosis and pouch creation. It is not that you still suffer from UC, it's just you still experience differing levels of function due to your altered anatomy.

I went on disability (in the States) during my surgeries and I actually consulted with a lawyer friend who helped me navigate how to word it, and to know exactly what they were looking for. At the time (10 years) it seemed weight loss was a big factor. They also sent me to a psych consult before I was approved. I don't know the procedure is in the UK.

Good luck!

You still have the UC diagnosis. They have removed your colon but you still have the disease. I just went went through getting social security disability in the U.S. You also have a j-pouch dysfunction I am guessing. For example I have chronic cuffitis in the remaining UC tissue at my rectal cuff. I don't know how they do it there but they requested medical records from all of my doctors. The medical records then supported my claim.

I also have other autoimmune problems and included them all in my claim. Fibromyalgia, GERD, hypoactive thyroid, and so and so on, should be listed as well as any non autoimmune problems.

Maybe you could start a new thread and put something like need advice for UK disability claim.
Good Luck
