I have finally decided to get surgery for my UC and the thought of quitting at step 1 of 3 (in my case as my UC is a bit too indeterminate for 2 steps) and just keeping an ileostomy has some appeal to me, to be honest- however would that mean forever giving up the weight machine training (and some free weights, albeit nit suoer heavy but not that light either) that I now do almost every day at the gym? Presently that is a major activity in my life and it would be a big loss to give it up.

Hi bad,
I would not say that you have to give it up but you do have to take a break from it for a while post op and let your surgery heal and settle into place...(6-8 weeks minimum..or more...no joke here)...people who have had abdomenal surgery can be hernia prone and having had them I can promise you that you really don't want to do that to yourself...Expecially with a stoma!
Give yourself time to heal, do alternative exercise like walking at first that doesn't put pressure on the site and then build up slowly towards your normal activity...And wear a belt!

Thanks, skn69- I certainly am willing to give it all up during the healing phase or phases- will do whatever it takes to ensure success. What concerns me is the idea of forvever giving some things up or forever being stuck on low weights, and your answer at least gives me hooe thatisnt the case. Have read of firefighters having perm ostomies and aurely they have to be able to be capable of carrying people.
