It's been 6 years since I had my colon removed due to UC. The surgeon had hoped to create the jpouch during the first operation, then complete it 3 months later. His concern was my weight, at 5'6" and 230lbs I was obese. Waking up from anesthesia he broke the news that he had to do a perminate illeo. If I lost significant weight he would do the jpouch. It took a year, but I lost 80 pounds and became part of the jpouch community! Here I am 6 years later back at 230lbs ( I did not get any taller)
I notice some issues with my pouch; straining to go, not feeling fully empty, bloody flare ups.... Do you think that my regaining all that weight has caused a problem with my pouch? My surgeon never said exactly why my weight was an issue to begin with. I was prob too embarrassed to ask. I wish losing was easy and that keeping it off was not such a struggle. I'm trying to loose and just hoping it is not too late!FYI I no longer have my surgeon, he moved out of state.

Generally, the weight loss requirement for surgery has to do with the technical issues, where intra-abdominal fat can "get in the way."

I gained lots of weight post op too, lost a bunch, and gained some back. But, my pouch does not seem to care one way or another. I think that your issues sound like chronic pouchitis and/or cuffitis. Have you been checked recently, or are you just "living with it?" You don't need a surgeon for follow up, as this sounds like a medical management thing. I suggest you get a good GI for that (surgeons like to do surgery). It is possible that you have an anal stricture, but I have issues with straining when my cuffitis acts up, and I definitely do not have a stricture.

Anybody who struggles with weight loss wishes it was easy (gaining sure seems to be)! It is never too late to get back on track and you cannot beat yourself up for backsliding.

Thanks Jan. my GI also moved away but ironically his wife contacted my husband's business for home renovations on their home that they need to sell. One convo lead to another and I have been able to get advice by phone from him. I told him I would make an appointment to come into the office (1 1/2 hrs from me) to get an exam and schedule tests. He wonders if it is scar tissue. He prescribed anucort as needed, which seems to help. I was just concerned because I remember a friend asking me before I had the jpouch surgery, "what if" I regained..... Just wondered if this is the answer to that"what if" question.
Thanks again
Dona
