Hi again. I posted ¨Flagyl ALREADY¨ this morning.  My daughter had takedown surgery just last Wednesday and has had high output since. The first 3 days 17 to 19 times in a 24 hour period. The stool was pretty thick. Last night she went 20 times from 8pm until 8am. Her stool has been loose, she has had strong urgency and even leakage during the day today.  I called the dr. and he prescribed Flagyl. She had a scope just before surgery which showed no pouchitis but he said she could have it now.  I decided to wait on giving her the Flagyl since I think it should only be given as a last resort.

After thinking about it all day, it dawned on me that these ¨pouchitis symptoms¨ only started after starting her back on VSL for the first time since surgery.  Soon after the diarrea started and didn´t stop all night. Her stool was thick all day before this and although she was going regularly, it wasn´t nearly the as much as before she took the probiotic. She also didn´t have the urgency or leakage before the VSL. I started googling it and found that others have had the same problem. One person said that diarrea is actually a known side affect.

I will be taking her in tomorrow for the surgeon to examine her and hopefully rule out pouchitis and just a side affect of the VSL!  Anyone else have the same experience??

It's certainly worth stopping the VSL for now to see if things get better. Not everyone tolerates it equally well, and it's not a critical part of her care.

Jeffsmom, VSL #3 is a high-potentcy probiotic with six beneficial bacterial strains. It's been shown in clinical studies to help prevent pouchitis. Its single-strength form (powder or capsules) is available over-the-counter, and its double-strength (DS) form requires a prescription. It's expensive. I use it at the maximum dose - 4 double-strength packets daily.

Thanks Scott. I am REALLY hoping the VSL is the problem and not a coincidence. I gave her half a packet of VSL this morning before I thought of it and the diarrea continued most of the day. I started giving her Citrucil from a recommendation here and it seems to have slowed things down a bit without the bloating and gas like Metamucil.  Also, her stool has started thickening this evening and has turned more brown which hopefully is a sign it was the VSL. I just hope much that´s the case as its way too soon to start having problems, she´s only 17. We´ll see tomorrow.

Thanks for all your feedback on my posts, it has been very helpful!  So grateful for support from people who know and care!

Good health to all.

Mary Beth
