My doctor prescribed VSL #3 packets for me but my insurance won't cover it. Does anyone know how or where I can get packets without sending me to the poor house?
Your first step should be to ask your doctor for a prescription for VSL#3 DS (double strength). This is the prescription only version. The other VSL#3 is over the counter and no prescription required. While not all carriers will cover VSL#3 DS, your chances are better.
I take the VSL#3 DS, out of pocket with insurance covering it my co-pay is 50.00. When my other insurance didn't cover it the out of pocket was $175.00 but negotiated with the pharmacy and they charged me $145.00 a month for it. If I ever have to pay out of pocket again I may try taking 1/2 packet a day to keep costs down and hope it still works well for me. Hope this helps.
Many people on this site discuss VSL3 packets rather than the tablets. Why? I take the tablets and they don't seem to have negative side effects for me but does that mean they're not as potent/effective as the packets?
I purchased VSL 3 online, for my daughter, she takes 4 tablets a day, it runs $100 a month. I realize this is a lot of money, but it really believe in this product. I tried hard to get the insurance to pay for it, but it was a no go. You can get it at VSL.com
I don't think there is a hard rule on this. The right maintenance dose is the dose that sustains remission the longest. That can vary from person to person. But generally, more is better. You just have to find the balance.
My husband's doctor finally prescribed the packets and insurance pays for that via the mail order (3 months worth).. Before had to go to CVS and get the pills which were $50 a month.
