tom - have you tried imodium or metamucil in the evening before going to bed? If so, have you noticed any difference?

Tom since waking up and going to the restroom while trying to sleep is part of the norm with a pouch, certain foods can lead to more sleep. After all this time though, I still have problems managing my intake. Since that annoys me, I take one Benadryl before I go to sleep. What that Benadryl does is put me back to sleep faster after I wake up and relieve myself. So far I've seen no side effects from it either.

kathy, im in more trouble when i try to eliminate imodium. metamucil im scared of because fiber gives me gas and when i have the unproductive nigh time bms its the gas that causes me the most agony. will the gas stop? would metamucil even though it causes gas guarantee the gas will come out easily. im scared to death to experiment after the wheat tore me up last night. white rice products only. come on father time. move me ahead quicker
I could not tolerate Metamucil either. Some people are sensitive to the mild purgative effect of psyllium and the gas causing effects. I had better luck with Citrucel (methycellulose). It is more inert. Less gas and cramping, and did a good job of thickening.

Tom, every part of your digestive system is ajusting to the newness of this pouch. The sensations you are feeling in that area is not only nevers, muscles, etc., healing from the surgery, but all of it trying to figure out what to do, and so is your brain. You will come to know what means go, what means gas, what means nothing and will eventually go away. I remember having spasms in my rectum (like a knife being shoved in there) for a long period after surgery. I does go away. 4 weeks is brand, brand new.

I've had a pouch for just over ten years. I've done lots of things since and been to a lot of places. Whilst my pouch doesn't always behave itself, the lingering memories of most of the places I've been to and things I have done have been of those places and achievements, not what my pouch was doing at the time.

rocket, thanks so much for the list and thanks to you all for the encouraging words. do you guys ever find yourself being funny silly happy excited like you were before colitis/j-pouch? i cant see me there at all but i hang on to your experiences. last night was the worst. again a good day then cement butt at night with unreal bloating to top it off. gonna cut back on the imodium. wish dilauded had an anti spasm effect because its slowing warming calming effect is dreamy. id live on it for a bit but dont want both that and imodium backing me up even worse plus coming off dilauded is hellish. ive done it 5 times now...

You're welcome. Other posters here have said that it helps if you lie down and put a heating pad on your belly. It does bring comfort.
Funny/Silly???????????? Have to agree with that about myself and my kids have told me that numerous times. I laugh at myself sometimes. Laughter is very good medicine and it doesn't cost a cent.
Hang in there and try to stay as positive as you can.
I see you are in NY. Are you ready for the storm that they are calling Frankenstorm?
