so woke up out of the blue Friday morning with horrible stomach pains. Stayed home from work. At first I though partial obstruction but as the day went in I had no nausea, not throwing up, no fever, and I was still pooping. I drank hot tea and used heating pad all day and night. Woke up Saturday morning and still in pain so drive my ass down to Cleveland Clinic as usual. ER did a CT scan and I was worried about a leak of course. Results were severe inflammation a few inches from connection site. I was admitted and put on IV Cipro and oral Tindamax since I can't do Flagyl due to it making me very ill. Here we are Monday early afternoon and doc said if I tolerate eating my lunch I can go home tonight. Dr Remzi is out of country till the 18th so seeing his partner Dr Charles. Sending me home on Oxycodone for pain and just Augmentin for antibiotic?? This puzzles me. Should it? Why take me off Cipro and just keep me on one antibiotic which is one that is high on the list of antibiotics that causes cdiff? Which I had after original takedown with first jpouch in 2008. Dr Remzi knows about my cdiff and is this something I should question??? Or just go with what they recommend?? As far as this goes, they said the pain should start to gradually subside as the swelling goes down from the inflammation. If for some reason it does not get better or continues to come back, then more testing needs to be done. But like I said before, no other symptoms at all except for the stomach pain. And they did the finger check and verified I have no stricture, and also my hemorrhoid is almost healed up.

Yes, I would question it. Dr. Charles may be well aware of your history with C. diff, but it is worth double checking, to be sure. This sounds like pouchitis, and with your history of leaks and sinus, you really want to treat this.

I think I would ask because otherwise this is just another thing to worry about! Augmentin can take the place of cipro+flagyl/tindamax. If I had a history of C diff, I would be ok with taking 2 antibiotics vs 1. Not sure if they are just trying to make it more convenient for you with just augmentin. In case they send you home on augmentin anyway, I have taken augmentin in the past and didn't get c diff so although its incidence is higher, it is not a definite!! Best of luck!!
Question, question, question!!!!! I luve by the theory that if yoy dont understand, make them explain in clear language until you do. Refress everyone of your history. Docts sometimes think a one size fits all but the readon you are there is because you are not a typical patient! Have them call Remzi if necessary! Insist, insist, insist if you have too! If necessary, call your Mom ! (Just kidding on that one)
see, i personally have been through way too much. Bnothing like what you guys have been through but i have had my own crazy issues. I got a rare cancer a number of years back brcause some genius thought it was not possible because "it was rare". Yea, i know it was rare, that just means someone gets it, nd sadly i was the one. So i trust no one, no matter how good you are or how much i like you. I know me better than u know me and i will one way or another make you lusten to me because when it comes to me, or my son, sadly, i am never wrong! Wish i wad, but so far i have no. So if you need amother, i will help! Except, i hope im too young for the job, haha!

I did question it till blue in the face and they know the history but insist on giving it to me. I know they said I could take probiotics with it, but I also have that S.Boullardi stuff as well. Doesn't that protect against cdiff as well? Which would be better to take? Pouchitis Jan. ? The inflammation is not in the pouch. Plus I don't have urgency or watery stool. My stool is still normal and not watery and only going 5-6 times a day like I've been going. But not really going past day and a half cuz I haven't ate since Thursday night. Just ate lunch at 2 pm. Turkey, mashed potatos, pudding and coffee. So far so good.
S. boullardii is a probiotic, so I am not sure what you are asking. It is just one of many types. You can take it along with whatever other probiotics you have.
If you have questioned the antibiotic and they are aware of your C. diff history, then I would recommend taking it as prescribed. You did your due diligence, and at this point, they feel the benefits outweigh the risks.
I am unclear how this is not pouchitis if the inflammation is a couple of inches from your connection, unless you are talking about your ostomy closure site. You do not want to under-treat and wind up with a stricture. Where ever this is located, treatment is indicated.

Doctors are people too. They have lives, egos, good days, bad days, breakups, sick children, spouses acting strangely, biorhythms and horoscopes (if you believe that sort of thing). At the end of the day, they can go home and leave their work behind but you have to live with the consequences. So I believe that you should ask away - but always with respect and always to the point.
At the end of your day, you may learn something new which may help you or someone else another day.
We can make better decisions if we are better informed.

Yes it is from the closure site, sorry. I have a probiotic and I also have the S Boullardi. Just trying to decide which to take? Don't want to take both. Funny thing is my hemorrhoid is almost cleared up now and is almost unnoticed now.
Why not take both probiotics? There is no contraindication that I am aware of.
Jan
Oh. So taking both is not frowned upon? I heard that probiotics could cause a lot of gas when first started???? That's why I question taking one rather than both.
S. boulardii is a completely different probiotic than others. It is a yeast, while others are bacteria.
Yes, you can take both.

Hey friends. just an update. Been working since out of hospital, just don't have the time off, its been used up for last 2 surgeries. I have been doing ok. Still have the pain in belly but don't know how bad it actually is since being on pain meds. I guess I need to cut back on them to really gauge where I am at. But then again I was in hospital on IV Dilaudid with pain, so I guess you could say my pain has decreased since I am on oral oxycodone 10mg and the pain isn't any worse, maybe a bit better actually. I am on the Augmentin twice a day, I think its like 800mg?? for 10 days. The only thing I don't like is that my poop is very pasty now from the pain meds and antibiotics. I am taking the S.Boullardi probiotic as well. And strangely enough I have absolutely no gas whatsoever now. It is a little comforting but I actually like farting on the toilet cuz I knew everything was out and actually felt empty. Now I am never 100% sure.. My hemorrhoid appears to be almost healed up as well which is nice. And like I said, they checked for stricture while I was in hospital a few days ago and everything was fine in that regard
Poucho, many people think "pasty" is the ideal poop consistency for a J-poucher. What consistency are you hoping for?
Before this all went down this weekend it was between pasty and apple sauce. I guess it's more so the gas blasts I miss cuz that would let me know it's all out. I guess I just don't know. Lol I've been from A to Z for soooo long I don't know what the normal is. Lol. Just weird I have almost no gas since the antibiotics
It's not that weird. Most of the gas is produced by bacteria, and you've gone nuclear on them. You'll probably get back more gas than you want when the antibiotic is finished.
And strangely enough, have more seepage issues on the antibiotics???
Update. It's been 6 days since out of hospital. I took myself off the Oxycodone on Friday night just to gauge my pain without them. I am actually having withdrawal like symptoms from them. Having out of the blue sweats. It's Sunday now and I'm having a little more gas now with I like a little rather than none at all. Helps me clean out. I still have a crampy pain below where ileostomy was. Not bad at all but still there. God I hope it continues to improve. I don't want to go through more testing and whatever that may bring. Means more time off work which I can't afford. My post op appt is this Thursday.
Hope so too! You've had enough shenanigans!

Chills on and off all night. Didn't sleep well because of it. No fever though. Could this still be caused from coming off of pain meds 3 days ago? Or something else going on?
I think it could still be withdrawal, but still keep ckecking your temp. Are you taking any pain meds that could keep your temp down?
Jan
I am not taking anything right now Jan except my Amoxicillan and probiotic. My pain med was straight oxycodone no Tylenol. I am at work now and no chills at all, only seems to hit me at night when sleeping. still slight pain under where my stoma was, but not stabbing pain, just a crampy pain that I only feel if moving a certain way, not all the time. Could this still be from the inflammation area that they found? if this continues what would be a solution for this?
The pain under former stoma is the healing. Jeffrey is going yhrough the same thing. Both of you seem like you are both following the same path, sadly.
Also from what you wete describing earlier sounds like withdrawl to me. Jeffrey had those symptoms last june when he was getting off all the oxy. Im glad you feel well enough to be back to work, thats great.
As far as whats happening, could be healing. You have been through so much, your poor body and mind are shot! Be patient with yourself.
Yeah. It's only been about a week since you went to the hospital. It takes time for this stuff to resolve. It sounds like the imflammation was quite severe in your case.
