next wed i will have surgery to repair the hernia adjacent  to the valve.  dr. kiran, at columbia/nyc, will do the surgery.  am looking forward to it being over and being home for the recovery.

if anybody has had this surgery or been at columbia and has any suggestions please tell me!  or any other suggestions.  (i did book a nice hotel room and will enjoy some luxury the prior night.)  this is my 10th major surgery since 1999, not all of them gi.  many have been to correct a prior medical error so i've got reason to be apprehensive.  plus, who ever has finished their to do list before going off for surgery????  i certainly haven't!

hope all are well, janet

First off, Good LUCK Janet,

Keeping my fingers crossed for an easy surgery, a quick recovery and a successful outcome.

Next, yup, had a peristomal hernia...3 to be exact.

The valve kept exvaginating...popping out at the time and leaking like a hose.

They tried to fix it from the outside using sutures, using open surgery and suturing it and finally with a mesh fix that was pure genius...he cut the mesh like a doughnut, slit one side and placed it around the stoma/valve and stapled...it has held since.

Not sure what your surgeon's plan is, ask him, just out of curiosity.

Ideas? Yup....Do Not Lift anything heavier than a postage stamp! Do not push anything heavier than a spoon and do not crouch down, bend down, squat down or twist. Bowling and gardening are out too...for now.

Give yourself one year.

I rushed it. I was in a hurry...ended up wasting a lot of time have re-surgeries when staying put, being kind to my body and not doing stairmaster 6 weeks post op would have done me the world of good.

Your pouch is way too important to be carrying a 10kg up the stairs or scrubbing floors for the company arriving...

Be nice to yourself.

thanks for your good wishes and seasoned advice.  not sure how i'd stay inactive for a year!!  will ask the doc to contact my physical therapist to review what i can and can't do.

have been obsessed and nervous about this surgery.  have had too many medical errors--and thus way too many extra surgeries --so have reason for concern.  looking forward to it being over and arriving back home!  great time of the year to stay extra hours in bed and catch up on reading.

will report back on techniques and recovery.  i know it is at least one night in hospital.  thanks, janet
