My 13 year old son is clearly antibiotic dependent. Cipro has worked for him. Rifaximin did not work. Tinidazole only worked when he was simultaneously taking cipro. Augmentin worked first with cipro, and then we gradually tapered him off cipro down to just augmentin (3x a day) and then down to 1 augmentin a day and then nothing. In 9 days he was in full flare and we put him back on cipro. Today I was worried we were getting to the point that cipro would stop working (as it has in past) and gave him augmentin this morning. However, two hours later he threw up his lunch (turkey meatloaf he had eaten before without throwing up). I think the augmentin may make him nauseated. What other antibiotics can anyone suggest in addition to flagyl?

Also, he had gone two weeks without throwing up. Is it even possible NOT having cipro this morning could impact him so quickly (impact bacteria level in pouch) that made him nauseated. Although he also thew up on eof his first days back on cipro. Do people with SIBO/pouchitis throw up? Or is this intermittent nausea/throwing up sounding more like crohns? Thank you.

I don't recall how long ago your son had his surgery but I have been on and off cipro ( more on than off) for ovet two years and it is still working for me. My Gi worked out a plan to pulse cipro where i sm on two weeks intwo weeks off. Sometimes I do but make it the full two weeks off due to worsening of symptoms. I also alternate days to stay at the least dose possible to keep me functioning.

I have never vomited from antibiotics but augmentin gives me very bad diarrhea and upset my stomach. This is a trial and error type of situation where you will most likely come across one or two meds that help him. He may need them for a longer period of time or on and off as others on this board do. The vomiting concerns me though as this is often a doom if a blockage. You should consilt his surgeon with your concerns especially if your son is in pain also
Jeane: Thanks for your reply. I think my son will be on a lot of cipro too. Do you ever lessen your dosage? Or just do one day off, one day on tusing your regular dosage? Do you do that in the middle of your "two weeks on?" Just wondering about best strategy for my son. His dosage has been 250 2x a day.

Also, I am not worried about a blockage. He is not in pain - just has intermittent nausea and sometimes vomiting -- so wondered if that is a sypmtom others have as well.

He has had many tests this summer. One pointed to crohns and the rest did not. Our pediatricians lean towards crohns and adult drs who have seen more pouches don't see it as crohns. But the nausea worries me. It had seemed like it was improving, so I was suprised today when it happened again.
