Hi everyone from Oz, I was just wondering if for the sake of travel insurance, we J pouchers are still considered to have UC? Went on a cruise last year, domestic in Australia, and had a very confusing time getting travel insurance, and as I am due to go on another cruise I was really trying to avoid the issue altogether, what do others think, still UC related travel insurance? Thanks

Hi Hever,
Long time no hear...hope the cruises mean that things are going well, health-wise, and that your pouch is being friendly and happy.
I have had my k pouch for over 35 yrs.
I do not declare it on travel insurance nor do I think that people with functional colons declare theirs...I consider it my normal plumbing and that's it.
If I have a problem while on vacation (and it has happened a couple of times over the years) they have paid.
It is a question of how far out you are from your surgery...usually they ask for 12 months but check with the insurer.
Certain surgeries I do not even bother to declare if they are non-incidental to my health (anything remotly esthetic or cosmetic including bunion surgery)...no point.
But if I am traveling post pouch surgery (I almost took my class to Miami for the marathon this coming Jan 2015 but thought better of it due to my recent pouch up-lift).
Too close to my surgical date and too dangerous for my healing process. I would not have been covered if anything had happened to me.
Have a wonderful trip...cruises are the best...would love to do another some day.
Sharon
Please contact your insurance company directly. In Canada the companies can be very very picky about what they will cover and whether the issue is "pre-existing" or not. A friend of mine was denied a large claim because he took a Tylenol before he departed. They said that it was obvious that he was ill before he left Canada and therefore the condition was pre-existing.
