Hi all,

I was just wondering whether or not someone had experienced something similar to me and, if so, what they did about it. Here goes:

I had total colectomy and J-pouch surgery in 2007 and, other than a few bad blockages and pouchitis etc. everything has been absolutely fine. Until last week. I had a very bad blockage (small bowel obstruction) and was hospitalised for a week with violent vomiting, gastric tubes, the works. Worst experience ever. Anyway, the blockage eventually passed and I was discharged.

Now since being discharged it feels like the whole workings of my system has completely changed. I experience significant pain in my stomach (genereally and whilst digesting). I can basically feel everything going through my whole system. I guess this could be down to the trauma/bruising from the last week? But the strangest thing is that I no longer feel the need to go when my pouch is full. The uncomfortable, full feeling is just not there so I have to guess. And, moreover, the capacity of my-j-pouch seems to have doubled. Without going into too much detail, when I go there is a lot. I basically do not recognise my system that I have grown used to over the last ten years.

I know this is all a bit weird but has anyone experienced anything similar and, if so, what did you do?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Robbon, i have experienced something similar post-blockage that my system and flow is not regular. It usually takes me 1-2 weeks to get things more regular but the most important thing is to try prevent any more blockages.

Advice i can give is micro manage your vegetable intake like the terminator. I can eat plenty of protein and rice with no issues but when it comes to veges/nuts/seeds/peels they are usually the ones that cause the blockage. I only eat baby spinach and tomato finely chopped and cooked. My main rule is to finely cut and cook all vegetables and to stay away from nuts altogether.

Let me know, if you have any other questions, would be happy to share my experiences on the trauma and recovery from blockages.

all the best
