Has anyone successfully obtained term life insurance after total colectomy? i'm trying to obtain more life insurance coverage, and want to use a company/insurance broker that understands how to underwrite my (our) situation. Thanks.

I've had no success at getting underwritten for life insurance. I've only gotten policies that required no history or physical exam (e.g. basic levels of employer-sponsored policies). Our mortality isn't actually increased, but if you think doctors are ignorant about J-pouches, actuaries have even less of a clue.
I believe it isn't the colectomy that is the problem, but the UC diagnosis. UC increases your cancer risk. I was able to get whole life insurance through work when I was 20. That was 40 years ago and I never was able to increase the value.

I agree, Jan. What's ironic is that a J-poucher's cancer risk (if it was for UC) is probably a bit lower than an otherwise healthy, coloned person, since a common cancer has been made very unlikely, but the insurance company hasn't a clue.
Agree with you both. I did get some insurance early on, but I've never been able to increase it. Worked in one state where job had a great policy that was just a benefit. The job was awful; the benefits were great. I wonder if you can just keep inquiring and meanwhile, maybe just save as much as you can - (obvious, I know) - as in - no new cars, etc. - that money goes into fund for your family? I look back at money I spent all my life on things I did not need and I'd have a fortune now if I didn't spend it on new cars, etc. I know that does not solve the problem immediately, but it might make you feel you are taking some control of your situation.
