I had my step one of three six weeks ago (colectomy with end ileo, rectum remains intact). My rectum went into spontaneous remission after surgery but started flaring up when I finished my pred taper. I've been using Canasa once/day at the suggestion of my surgeon's nurse but it seems to be getting slowly steadily worse. Luckily there is no pain but I now pass bloody mucus with some urgency 2-5x/day.
Can you tell me about your experience with inflammation in the retained rectum? Are there any other treatments that are used besides Canasa? I never responded to mesalamine in any form so I'm not surprised it doesn't seem to be helping. Is inflammation in the rectum going to increase the risk of complications during step 2? What about possibly using steroid foam? Am I more likely to have cuffitis after the j-pouch is formed because the rectum is flaring now?
Can't seem to find too much info out there about inflammation in the retained rectum, I guess because it's a "temporary" condition anyway... Just curious what experiences of others have been. My surgeon's nurse said that the occurrence rate is about 50% in their practice.
