I had my appointment with my surgeons today and after my scope they have decided it is time to do the take down. Not that I am not excited to get rid of my ileostomy. Not that it was as bad as I had expected once I had accepted it mentally and physically it just became a part of who I am. It didnt slow me down or stop me from dressing the way I always have. I am a little nervous about the take down. I am most afraid of the butt burn. Is there anything I should take to the hospital with me to make sure I am using everything possible to be as comfortable as possible during the initial first days of the big change. My dr. has already warned me the biggest thing with the take down will be the enormous amount of BM.

I didn't have a lot of BM at the hospital, definitely no butt burn there. But it is always best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Bring your own soft toilet paper, flushable wet wipes, and the butt cream of your choice. A lot of people recommend Calmoseptine that can be purchased at Walgreens. I do not like it, the menthol burns worse than the butt burn.

Prepare to take nice hot baths to offset the butt burn, a bidet is nice, if you do buy an expensive one opt for WARM water!!! I live in South Florida and the water is still too cold.

Stay positive and remember that your body needs a lot of time to adjust to the new plumbing. Do not make any torso twists, I accidentally did and popped a couple stitches. (ouch)

I'm five weeks out and I've noticed a big improvement over the last week. Keep your spirits up and your loved ones close!
Yes the BB and the soreness of going to the bathroom alot has been the worst part for me. I have a bidet at home and a hand held one that I use at work and out on the road. Alot of people will even use squirt bottles with warm soapy water in it. Don't eat alot of food that will cause alot of acid. I for one can't eat anything with tomato sauce or paste. Some people rarely even get the dreaded BB but others do and it is best to be prepared for sure. Take baby wipes with you to the hospital and always have them in your purse if you can't wash off Good luck to you. How long have you had your ostomy? Oh and I use calmoseptine creme all the time , when I am irritated and as a preventative maint. in between so I don't get the BB or irritation.
So my post surgery experience was a difficult bout- but eventually, it has been better than with the temp ostomy ( I had many seal breaking issues).

Definitely take Calmoseptine- go out to a walgreens and buy 3-4 bottles - you will end up using them. also definitely take the baby or fresh wipes as well. The first few days I was in extreme butt burn mode- I would hop in for a hot shower after each trip and there were MANY- 15 times a day- shortly after it slowed down to 12 times, but still a lot of burn. 3 months out I still get burn, but nothing coming anywhere as close to those first couple weeks. It might seem like it will never get better, like the healing is taking to long, but hopefully it will- it did in my case.
