Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I last posted on the forums. I had my last surgery with Dr. Fazio in 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic and I believe he's no longer performing surgeries? am I correct?

I was diagnosed with Crohn's back in 2002 and had 7 surgeries ranging from removing the colon in 2 steps, pouch revision, adhesions, fistulas, and finally in 2008 a permanent Ileostomy.

2 days ago, I started having severe pain that felt like something in my abdomen is about to pop. I saw the local gastroenterologist and she found out that I have an edema in parts of the intestines and a twist/kink in another part of the small intestines that prevents food and gas from moving through. I was put on prednisone for the edema and Ensure and told to stop eating solid food.

I was told that I had to have laproscopic surgery to remove the kink. My first thought was the Cleveland Clinic. I emailed my GI there Dr. Bo Shen but don't know any surgeons in there other than Dr. Fazio. I read in here about Dr. Remzi which a lot of people like.

Please let me know. I hope they can schedule a surgery for me soon. I don't like the pain and hate being on Ensure for meals.

Thank you for replying Marianne.

I had my first 3 surgeries in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital but later with the complications that followed, I did not like their treatment I felt safer and more secure with Dr. Fazio and Dr. Bo Shen

That's why I feel the need to go again to Cleveland Clinic.

The sad part about this abdominal obstruction from what I've read online, is that there is no guarantee that it might not return. I don't like this uncertainty.

I'm waiting for an appointment with Dr. Bo Shen and Dr. Remzi for now.

Within 6 months of my takedown my small intestine kinked. Most painful experience of my life....more so than childbirth! Anyway, my surgeon waited it out....with me in the hospital for 6 days.....and things finally "unkinked". Ever since then he reminds me that it could easily happen again. Well, that blockage happened over 10 years ago and I've never had another one. Good luck!
I'm not sure at what point exactly surgery is required to "unkink" a bowel. I waited mine out for several days in the hospital with an NG tube, IV fluids, and daily x-rays. Also 2 CAT scans and and MRI. As there was no immediate threat to me, the GI team and surgical team checked on my twice a day and we kept waiting til things cleared up. They don't really know what causes them to unkink, but they say that the NG tube to give the bowels a rest and the hydration from the IV is very helpful.
My blockage story is similar to clz81's While in the hospital on morphine I also had an NG tube inserted and until the twisted small intestine untwisted, I was on IVs only. Nothing by mouth....which was fine with me. I was grateful for the morphine, believe me! What finally caused my small intestine to untwist? Here is my guess....I've never really asked the question of my surgeon but every time my surgeon visited me.....at least twice or three times a day, he would start by placing his hands on my abdomen and would push on the area. I thought I'd die from the pain....even with morphine. He probably didn't do this for more than a couple of minutes each time. I presumed he was examining me. Since then I've wondered if he wasn't trying to move things around inside me by pressing on my abdomen. B One of these days I'll remember to ask him. Best wishes!
