I have had my jpouch for 23 years.  I had a hysterectomy which turned into intestinal surgery as well 7 years ago.  Here is my current problem: A stitch from the hysterectomy went through the wall of the vaginal cuff and now I have granular tissue that bleeds.  The granular tissue has been cauterized several times and continues to grow.  It gets pussy and cultures have come back with fecal bacteria.  I have had a ct scan, mri scan and a barium test to rule out a fistula.  The jpouch is right up against the area where the granular tissue is in the vagina which means the granular tissue can’t just be removed without a possible issue to the jpouch.  My colorectal surgeon said he must watch from my inside when the tissue is removed to make sure my jpouch stays intact and I don’t have any issues with it.  He said there’s a possibility I could end up with an ileostomy.  That could be temporary.  The chance of this being done laparoscopically is slim due to all the scar tissue inside me.  I would probably be cut open.  (Removal of tissue in vagina will be vaginal.)  I know this situation can’t be ignored.  I am worried about losing my jpouch and causing a bigger issue.  What is it like with an ileostomy?  Is daily life affected?

I had an ileostomy for 18 months before my j pouch.  I worked full time as a nurse in a busy paediatric recovery room and emergency room.  I played in a pipe band and travelled all over.  I did yoga, walked, lots of social activities.  There are millions of ostomates around the world who do EVERYTHING (except poop out of their rectums).  I believe the limits of an ileostomy are only those we impose on ourselves.
