Hello all,

I finished up my surgeries for my J pouch (had to get this due to a stricture with my ileorectal anastomosis) in August 2016. I was told by nurses and my gastroenterologist to take a fiber supplement, VSL #3, and a multivitamin. No one told me exactly what type to take, so I was taking all in pill form (HATE the powdered fiber). Now a assistant to my gastro doctor told me that I am unable to digest and absorb vitamin and multivitamin pills. She told me to take gummy supplements or even Flintstone vitamins(really??).

I don't understand this, since this person never said anything about taking other pills (such as Tylenol and Fosomax, which she knows I take).

Any ideas or similar experiences?

Thank you!

I take all gummy products; omega fish oil kids brand and Vitafusion multivitamins and calcium.  The only things I take that are not gummy are my probiotic and iron pill which is small.  When I took the fish oil capsule it came out whole in my bag.  Not sure about the Fosomax, unless it breaks down more quickly (just a guess).  I am looking into liquid iron supplement if my levels are low at my next physical.

Not everyone thinks about that sort of thing...not even nurses or surgeons...my pharmacist has to be constantly reminded to Not give me the slow dissolving meds but to give me the non-coated pills...this sort of problem is just not on their radar and honestly most people just are not that interested in knowing the details.

I did years of useless supplements, meds, drugs etc only to find them popping out whole from my pouch and wondering why I was never getting well.

I generally have to be my own advocate for this sort of stuff...I take liquid vitamin B's, chewables whenever I can find them in other vitamins if not then gummies or disolvables...whichever way they exist I take them as long as they are Not time released or coated.

Certain meds you can crush in a pill crusher or with a spoon. Ask first.

You should also try to take your meds with food, it slows down the process.

Learn what Your body needs and give it to yourself. We are all different but most of us have a short digestive tract and fast digestion time.

there has always been an argument that 'liquid' supplements are more easily absorbed into the body, even for people with colons, but 90+% of digestion occurs in the small intestine, so lack of a colon should make any difference.

Theres also the argument that vitamin supplements can actually throw your body out of sync because some vitamins require other vitamins or minerals (like copper or manganese) to help with absorbtion.  So if you supplement one without the other you can lead to a deficiency.

Good advice is to eat a good quality diet, fresh fruit and veggies being natural have the correct balances in (or a least the balances we have evolved to thrive on over the years), and that is why organic is best.

Fibre supplements etc have a more mechanical function, (they swell in water and thicken you up) so they are less troublesome

Thanks everyone for the info! Jan, good point that I would see pills coming through (I never have) and that most pills are digested in the stomach or small intestine. I was taking Metafiber pills because I have found that the ingredient (methylcellulose) doesn't produce gas as other fiber products have for me and I will go back to taking those now.
