We have been trying to conceive for 6 months now with no success.  I have been on clomid the last 2 cycles and that has not worked either.  We are about to try IUI this cycle but I am worried its a waste of time and effort.  Has anyone with post surgical infertility had success with IUI? Or given the potential scaring, it makes sense to do IVF?  (I did have a HSG that showed my tubes were open but I know that's not fully conclusive).  Feeling very frustrated!

I have been trying to concieve for about a year now, still no luck and this would be my first.I think it would be based on your personal preference and situation. If both tubes are showing open then IUI is still a viable option. So I would try that first for a few cycles maybe 3-4 then go down the IVF route.

For me, they discovered a hydrosalpinx( tube was completely blocked and dialated significantly) on my right tube, did a laparoscopy right salpingectomy and lysis of adhesions. Did an HSG found my left tube is partially dialated so only slightly diseased and I was given green light for IUI, if it had been blocked I would not even have IUI as an option and natural conception would be impossible. In my case IUI is completely covered where IVF is not so IUI is a cheaper route for me to try. In my last 4 cycles I only did 1 successful IUI because in order to do it I have to have follicles on my good side which is my left. I've been on clomid and letrozole and found the combination of the two worked best for me, but its very frustrating to be taking these hormones ( which have horrible side effects) and having a cycle where they can't even do IUI and I know natural conception in my case is highly unlikely. So at this point I am most likely starting IVF next cycle, and to be honest not really thrilled with it or this process at all. But I know in the end it's all worth it.

I'm not sure this what you want to hear, but I have done 3 iui's which were textbook perfect according to the doctor,  except that I didn't get pregnant. I've had 3 HSG's that all came back clear. We recently moved on to IVF and just had our egg retrieval a few weeks ago. We are waiting for further test results before transfer but everything is looking very promising. I feel like IUI is worth a shot because you never know if it will work. I don't feel like it was a waste of time or effort because now we know that IVF is the way to go. We have to pay for IVF out of pocket so I needed that reassurance that it was the best option for us. I have for a long time suspected that scar tissue was preventing me from getting pregnant, but I haven't had confirmation. Even though they didn't work out, I don't regret doing the IUIs.

My point about the insurance is simply that the drs and insurance company felt the chances of success with IUI were so low they were willing to waive the required cycles.

If you do IUI, you should be sure to have your follicle development monitored very closely by ultrasound to try and manage the possibility of a high order multpile pregnancy.  This was the other reason my drs didn't want to do IUI - because it is almost impossible to manage the risks of mutiple births and they felt I should not carry more than 2 babies at a time
