I recently had a blockage from eating pees.. the blockage has passed but when I had it my stoma hurt and it made my stoma swell. It also made my stoma bleed at the bottom. It's not leaking tons of blood but there is blood. Also very painful when I changed my wafer!! Since the adhesive paste has alcohol it was burning. Some of the skin is also burning due to the inflammation of the stoma. Has anyone had experience dealing with this problem? Does the blood from the swelling reduce as the stoma shrinks to normal size? And any good cures for when the skin is kinda raw and burning? Thank you !! My take down is next month

Hi, KC23.
When I had my stoma and my skin was burning and bleeding, my stoma nurse used Marathon Skin Protector. It comes in small vials with a tiny sponge on top. Each vial is one-time use, and you apply the purple liquid directly on any bleeding, inflamed spot. It forms a crust on your raw spots, allowing the sores underneath to heal. It gave me INSTANT relief from five weeks of constant excruciating pain when acid liquid stool exited my retracted stoma. For the first time in five weeks I didn't cry when my stoma was active. You can find it on Amazon. It's fairly expensive, and each vial is used only once, but if it gives you relief from pain it's worth it. I hope it can help you.
In addition, have you tried stoma powder? I use that and a barrier spray. When skin is bad apply stoma and then the spray several times to protect your skin under the appliance. These are both sold on amazon but your stoma nurse or doctor can prescribe them for you. It depends on what your insurance will pay for.
My stoma bleeds some. I think some of it is normal. Mine also can get larger. If yours gets really large then putting plain white sugar on it will help to reduce it in size. I read about this and have not needed to use it yet.
I still don't eat peas, mushrooms, salads or nuts and I have had my permanent ileo for 18 months. Every now and then I try a little lettuce on a sandwich and it still shoots ahead of the other food therefore coming out first. I put kale and carrots along with fruits and a vegan protein powder in my daily smoothie. That is how I get my daily fruits and veggies.
Thank you, I know it's normal to bleed but since I had a blockage it has been swollen and blood is larger around the stoma, it's not the normal blood you would usually see. I also have a imprint of where the seal is made on my skin, but idk if that's just where I have had my stoma since November 8th, 2016. My take down is at the end of February so I hope all goes well. It's just been painful taking off my wafer even with my adhesive remover spray. I guess since my skin is so irritated. I'm gonna use my barrier rings instead of the paste for a while until my skin has healed. Since they don't have alcohol on the rings it's ALOT less painful when putting my wafer on I use the adapt barrier rings from hollister.
I use the barrier rings and not the paste too. I had a horrible time with my skin and went to the local stoma nurse as well as additional appointments with the Mayo Clinic Stoma nurses. Mayo is 3.5 hours away but that is where my surgeon is. Both local and Mayo nurses have me roll half of a thick ring into a worm like fashion and use it instead of the paste. I put the "worm" around the opening and press it down a bit before putting on the appliance. Hopefully changing to this will help your skin heal.
I ordered a "stoma cup" to put on to give my skin a break for a half hour or so in-between taking off my appliance and getting the next one ready to put on. It is held in place by one of the appliance belts. I think it cost around $15 including postage and is basically a plastic measuring cup with openings to hook up the belt to it. I just googled "stoma cup" and found out where to buy it. I got it right away so maybe you'd like to try this to give your skin to air out after washing it. I know the time of day that it usually isn't active so change then. The cup is just insurance in case some oop: comes out.
I hope your take down is a success. It is an easy surgery compared to the first one! You are already ahead of where I was at this time. I didn't find this group until after take down and awful butt burn. You know what to expect and this will be good for you mentally.
