Hi everyone! I just wanted to ask has anyone had their surgeries (steps 1,2 and 3) at st marks horpital in harrow in england? And has anyone also had the surgeries preformed by professor philips at st marks horpital? If so, I would be so grateful to hear about anyones experience and how they are getting on now.

I had to have emergency surgery as my colon perforated due to a major uc flare that didn't settle after the birth of my baby, I had my op on the 14 feb 2011, and currently had an ileostomy, I desperatly want the j pouch surgery but am scared about all the problems that can happen, any experiences would be very very much appreciated, thank you

Hi Sally

I believe St Marks Hospital is one of the leading centres for pouch surgery in the UK (if not the world). Sir Alan Parks, the surgeon accredited with pioneering pouch surgery back in 1978 and Professor John Nicholls, another pioneer in its development both practiced at St Marks Hospital.

Whilst I’m assuming both the above have most likely long retired by now, I’d expect the surgeons and the facilities to be of the highest standards, so I think you’ll be in very good hands.

I had my surgery preformed by Professor Neil Mortensen at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, another of the leading centres.

Good luck

I have been a patient of St Marksmfor over 20 years, and had my 2 step surgery there by Mr Kennedy n may 2009 . Mr Phillips has a phenomenal reputation.

The hospital itself is oversubscribed, and it can take a while to get seen. I have waited over 5 hours in outpatients on several occasions. It is fairly typical to wait in NHS hospitals though!

All in all the wealth of experience and excellence at St Marks outweighs any problems- there is a fantastic nurse specialist who puts me in mind of our Jan Dollar here!
