I've had a j-pouch for 10 years now. I've had bad anxiety since the surgery and recently gave Zoloft a try. A low 50mg dose had wonderful effects on my anxiety but caused me to go to full-on explosive water diarrhea. After on month I moved to Cymbalta which I have been on for two weeks. Same problem - Extreme diarrhea.

Is there any point to continue and try other SSRIs or SNRIs and expect that they may not cause diarrhea?

Is there anyone with a J-pouch on this forum that has been able to take SSRIs without increased or severe diarrhea? I've been wanting to try Lexapro next but am very leery now have tried two drugs that act as serotonin reuptake inhibitors with the same GI side effects. Constipation is a listed side effect possibly and that would be fantastic but instead I get increased loose stools.

Please help!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.  I have tried Paxil, celexa, and lexapro. They all tore me up.  They really helped me thru some tough times, though. I haven't had to take any ssri's for several years now but I do take trazodone at bedtime to help me sleep and it has been helpful with my anxiety as a bonus and has zero effect on my pouch. Hope u can land on something that works for you!

Wellbutrin is another one you may want to try. Very similar to an SSRI and helped with my anxiety for years. Also easy to come off if you need too. Tricyclics are not. Kind of wish I would have never started nortriptyline (for migraines) because I don't want to take it forever if I don't need to but I have tried unsuccessfully to ween off but it was too difficult.

Thanks MN, I've tried Wellbutran a few times in life thinking I was depressed or moody but it was like taking a sugar pill for me. No effect positive or negative. I've been Dx'd with "Pure OCD" which is a powerful thought rumination anxiety condition that can respond favorably to SSRIs (but not anxiety meds like Xanax). I've got a few more SSRIs I can try and then move on to mood stabilizers. Gut flora might be a good target next as there are now quite a few university Psychiatry cases where mental illness was shockingly cured by probiotics (eliminating C. Diff). I'm wondering if I've been dealing with lifelong gut bacterial problems.

Ditto on the Zoloft!  Ativan is an anti-anxiety Rx and it did wonders to lift my mood and stop the constant pity party during my "situational" depression with zero side-effects for me.

I'm on Ativan as well I'm on a 0.5 dosage for anxiety it seems ok for a lil time I take 1 in the morning and 1 at night but I still get edgy I was think two in the day and 1 at night what's your dosage and how often? Thx
