Hi,
I have an 18 year old j-pouch with relatively few problems over the years. About 6 months ago I was having some problems and had a few scopes and all my surgeon saw was cuffitis. Was on salofalk suppositories for a few months until my surgeon said everything looked great. But I have almost constant spasms - a few times every hour. It is not an urge to go, because when I rush to the toilet there is nothing to come out. The spasm is in my rectum or j-pouch, I cannot tell which. They are painful, especially when there is something in my pouch. I don't think it is pouchitis because I have had it before a few times and I have no other symptoms besides the spasms.

Anybody else experience this or have an idea what it is?? Surely somebody else has had this problem.

Thanks everybody.

My spasms are not painful, but I worry that there is output along with spasm. My doctor prescribed Hyoscyamine, .125 mg every 4 hours. We've increased dosage- double that if needed and I am so relieved with results. There are other names for it, but I too take it sublingualy- under tongue and it dissolves. It is a prescription- ask your Dr. Or nurse. Does give me severe dry mouth, and contact lenses drier than usual. I'll deal with those to have control of spasms! Good luck! Laurie

Thanks Laurie,
So are you saying that you have a spasm with no pain? So is it just a feeling of an urge and it feels like something just might 'slip' out? Is there a diagnosis of what causes this?

My spasms have been much less frequent lately. But it is still strange.

Thanks for your response.

I have a K-pouch and have experienced spasms a few times. I had no pain. My doctor thought it could be a sign of a partial obstruction and he wanted me to get a CT scan. I finally scheduled the tests and the spasms disappeared the day before the scheduled exam. They have never returned. Oh, I may get a little twitch once in a while, but nothing serious.

Yes, exactly! Just urge and sometimes follows actual output. Prior to using hyoscyamine, I would go to bathroom every time felt spasm- you know, just in case ... But the spasms stop with this pill under tongue. My dose is .125 but my fabulous nurse checked and there is a dose .250 so I know I can double if spasms don't stop. Glad yours are getting better!
