Hi All!

I just had my j-pouch creation surgery on 2/1, and now have a new stoma to get used to(I've had an ileostomy for a year now). It has been really hard to get a good seal around the stoma and therefore I've had a lot of skin irritation, and have had to change my entire appliance once a day!! I used change it once every 4 days. The burning is so bad at times, I don't know what to do. I use eakin seals, which had worked in the past, and have been using the powder to build a crust on the irritated areas, but still it's not working for more than a day. The shape of by stomach isn't helping either, since there is a ridge right through the middle of the stoma on both sides, which is where the skin irritation is the worst.

Any advice on different techniques I can try that may help? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

My take-down is scheduled for 3/13, and it can't come soon enough!!! 20 days and counting!

I went through the same thing as far as skin irritation. I changed the appliance every day and could never get a good seal for whatever reason. I ended up with a yeast infection. My recommendation would be to see one of the ostomy nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital. They are the best. They can possibly help you on strategies for a good seal. They could seal me for a week.

Hi there...When I had my ileostomy I struggled for the first couple of months with maintaining a good seal. Sometimes had to change the appliance 2-3 times in a day because of leaks. Unfortunately for me the placement of my stoma ended up being in a weird place, my stoma retracted and I was also in competition with a wound infection that was right next to my stoma site that would drain and compromise the seal on my ostomy appliance. I met with the wound clinic and ostomy nurses and had to try several different appliances and set ups before finding the one that worked the best. I tried eakin seals, convex appliances since my stoma was retracted as well, stoma powder. The ostomy nurses also tried molding the eakin seals into strips to fill the crevices in my skin to fill them up versus using the entire eakin seal and that didn't work either. Finally I found a bag/appliance through convatec that worked really well. I found that there adheasive was better and the flange seems to self mold to fill in all of the crevices on my skin. Sometimes it looked and felt that it should be leaking and wasn't. Ended up that just that bag/appliance alone I could maintain for 4 days using nothing else. So the long and the short of it alot is trial and error. Very frustrating and upsetting at times too but what I ended up doing was getting a bunch of samples of different bags from the supply companies and try different things. Also get in with an ostomy nurse as they have some great techniques they can try. Another thing that I found invaluable that one of the ostomy nurses recommended for my skin irritation was soaking my stoma and surrounding skin with Domeboro's solution which I did when I changed my appliance. Just saturate a piece of gauze with it and place it over the irritated skin and let it soak for 15 minutes or so and it immediately took the pain, redness and oozing away. It was like magic for me when things were really raw and healed me up good so also helped in maintaining a good seal because the irritated skin stopped oozing and healed up nice.

Sorry this was so long winded but hope you find some of it helpful/useful.
