Hi,
I will have my takedown in early may 2014.
I've already started to discuss a skiing vacation (heliskiing) during March / April the year after with my friends. I know, it's very early and maybe not so clever, but I would like to know if I can continue thinking about it....

Is it realistic at all? Probably I will need to do 5-6 hours of activity with only one possible "emptying" of pouch during that time?
Can that be done in less than a year after takedown?
Have anyone tried something similar?

Regards,
Tim

I am 8 months post take-down and I can go 5-6 hours without releasing. But generally this is if I don't eat after dinner I empty my pouch before bedtime. So, realistically it is about 12 hours.

I take no meds for my pouch except Align (a probiotic).

I do find that the busier I am and the more active, the less I think about it and the longer I can wait. I would say that my pouch improvements occurred 6 months post take down.

It's absolutely realistic -- I'm about five months post takedown right now and I think I would be OK to go on a ski trip. I typically go about 4 hours between bowel movements, and I can go quite a bit more based on time of day/meals eaten (e.g. if I have a light breakfast I can usually last about 8 hours through the workday).

I think more important than worrying about the bathroom stuff is that you will have to make sure that you sloooowly rehab your core strength in the year after takedown so you can safely stabilize yourself while you're skiing.

That said, there are no guarantees and there's a wide range of post takedown experiences. There are some people who would not be ready, but it's definitely not the majority.
I've had my pouch almost 6 months now and I'd say if I was stronger I'd defiantly say that would be easy peasy! The first maybe 3/4 months after take down was hell and I never thought I'd be able to do normal stuff again but now it's much easier! I'd make sure you eat your dinner early and not eat til you bursting at the seems tho! My wound still hasn't healed which I think is partly why I'm still not very strong but in another 6 months I'd assume il be running about the place!

I went skiing last year in the mountains, and it was great! I normally don't take Imodium during the day so I took one around lunch time to keep my afternoon bathroom trips quiet. I took a bathroom break at lunch at the top of the hill and then when we were at the bottom for the day. Also, I think when you are active like that, you don't really think about needing to use the bathroom. Go for it!
