Sinus/Fistula Laid-Open

Hi Guys

Been having pain problems around the back passage so my surgeon sent me for a MRI, this showed a sinus.

My surgeon decided to lay it open on Tuesday and I have to say its ssooo painful.

The problem I have now is yesterday my dissolvable stitches have opened and my wound has opened too, this is causing me pain and constant flow of bleeding. Not sure what to do, just give is time to heal? and control the bleeding by placing padding there? or should I go to A&E.

Would appreciate any advice...

If the bleeding does not stop, your only option is to be seen in urgent care or emergency. Of course, the degree of bleeding matters. If it is just some oozing, then using gauze and pressure. But, if it is a brisk bleed that does not stop, you need attention.

Thank you Jan, just got loads of gauge and apply new one each time I go to the toilet.

What about the wound though its opened about about 0.5-1cm, does this need stitching up again or should it be left open now. Just worried it may not heal right.

Generally, once a wound opens, it has to heal that way. Otherwise, infection sets in. But call your doctor to find out. The longer it is open, then the less chance there is to resuture it.

Thanks Jan really appreciate your advice.

Guess I will leave it now as its hard to get hold of my surgeon. Last question if I leave it open will is close up while healing or will it leave a hole?

It should close, but take longer. Keep trying to get your surgeon, or anyone who is covering for him.

OK, starting to get a yellowish discharge from the wound now but no smell, guess it may be a sign of infection, got a appointment with my doctor tomorrow..

My fistula puts out mucus that has no smell, just an FYI. A fistula becomes part of your GI tract, and bowels secrete mucus, hence the drainage. Not to frighten you.

Thanks but as its been laid-open, I shouldn't really have a sinus/fistula anymore. Been to my doctor who feels its healing well but took a swab to check for any infections, should get my results in a few days....
