Hi gang,

just a quick question. When showering, what do you do with your bag? Currently, I roll it up, and tape it into a small roll so it doesn't get soaking wet (the cloth on the bag gets all stinky if it keeps getting wet). But I'm curious if any of you remove your bag from the flange completely, and if so, does it cause the adhesive on the flange to fall off? Just curious, oh yeah, I'm having yet another surgery next Friday so I may not be around for a while, wish me luck, he's removing all the adhesions that keep causing the bowel to loop so tightly I'm getting constant blockages, wish me luck!

Cheers,

Eirc, I have no showering with an appliance advice for you. That is actually one thing I have absolutely no expereince or knowledge about (never had an ostomy)!

But I wanted to wish the best of luck with this next surgery. Most people here have had good results with lysis of adhesion surgery, so fingers crossed for you. It is high time you had a good, long break from pain and complications.

Take care,

Hi Eric - I don't do anything special. I just shower with the bag as is and when I get out I use my towel to wrap the bag and rub it to dry it a bit. Then I use toilet paper or paper towels to wrap it when I am getting ready (using underwear to hold it in place). By the time I'm done getting ready the bag is dry and I can remove the paper...

Good luck with your surgery.
Eric,

Your bag can get wet. No need for taping and/or rolling it up. Just use a blow dryer after you exit the shower, but watch the heat from the dryer. Also on the days that you are changing your appliance, take off everything and enjoy a nice shower without it. It will not harm it and it's heavenly. I use dial soap for showering, which rinses off clean, but I actually don't use soap around the stoma area. I just let the warm water clean the stoma and the area around it. I gently use my finger tips to remove any excess paste. It's so wonderful to shower without an appliance on; try it sometime. (I use gauze after a shower to wrap the stoma.) Then afterwards just do your usual appliance change.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

P.S. Like Jill, I'm a FIRM believer in less is more.
If it's going to be just a pretty quick shower, I don't use anything, then wrap an absorbent washcloth around my bag when I get out and blow-dry on cool setting, if needed. If I'm taking a longer shower (I admit to indulging in long hot showers sometimes!), I like to fold up the bag and wrap plastic wrap around my waist to keep it drier. That is probably not necessary, but it makes me feel more comfortable because the appliance is less wet after the shower and easier to get ready to dress without the extra dampness.

You'll find what's comfortable for you through trial and error but my understanding is that it really isn't necessary to do anything special when showering. The main thing is to not use a hot blow dryer on the seal after you get out.
