Hi there,

I am sure this has come up before, I did a quick search but didn't see anything quite like what I'm experiencing.

I am almost 3 yrs out from take down and thankfully all has been working great for a long time.

Every now and then I would have a searing pain that starts at the site of where the stoma was, followed by what I can only describe as a waving pain through my entire system and then campy type pain for a few hours. When it hits the only thing hat helps is laying down and waiting it out. It happened so infrequently that I just didn't worry abou it,

The past few weeks it's been happening more often and lasting longer. Ad the pain is lingering on.

I am nauseous, heater having no output or massive. Wondering if this is some sort of blockage?

Who do you see for this type of follow up care? I called the surgeon and they said to see my GP. I went ahead and made an appt with them but it's not until June! My GP can get me in on Tues, but honestly at this point I'm thinking of going to an urgent care clinic.

I even called in sck to work today which is not something I ever do....so you know I'm feeling bad!

Any thoughts or advice are much appreciated.

This sounds like an adhesion causing a partial obstruction. Not an emergency, so it is fine to wait until next week to see your GP. If you are staying home, might be a good idea to call your GP's office back and see if they can squeeze you in on an urgent basis. You probably need a referral to your surgeon anyway, so may as well get the ball rolling. If the pain becomes constant, then skip the urgent care and go to the ER. Unless the urgent care is part of your regular physician system, I would not waste your time seeing one of those generic clinics where they have no information on you. In the meantime, avoid solid foods and stick to a liquid diet until the pain is gone.

Thanks so much Jan! I am going to go ahead and wait to my GP on Tuesday. He's on vacation this week and booked up Mon. He's been my Dr for years and I really trust him. Thankfully my insurance does not require referrals to specialists, but the surgeons office couldn't work me in before July.

I can definitely manage, just hurting. Started liquid diet today, seems to be ok so far. So glad I splurged on a vitamix earlier this year. Going with some pretty plain bannana/yogurt smoothies right now.

Interesting that after so much time of things going great this comes up now. Will check in after Dr visit next week.

Adhesions can cause problems decades later, and the ostomy site is the most common area for this to occur.

I'm not getting this "not until July" business. Did you tell the receptionist that you are a returning patient and having new, sharp pain related to your surgical site? Seems like they are treating you like a new patient.
