Hello Everyone

I am dealing with intolerance to milk and have become extremely sensitive to it and even a spoonful of milk causes me immediate gas and bloating and if I consume more i also get painful cramps till its out of the system .I am not sure if it is lactose intolerance or intolerance to milk protein or both .. I have been drinking only lactose free milk since my takedown in 2008 coz I thought would be easier on my system though I could digest normal milk .

But now I cannot tolerate spoonful of lactose free milk as well .

on top of that most difficult thing I am dealing with is I was taking generic brand of 6 Imodiums but cannot tolerate them anymore and get similar symptoms of gas, bloating etc

when I checked the inactive ingredients ,anhydrous lactose in it as a filler seems to be an issue . Though in very little amount it is still causing symptoms even if i take just one pill .

Are there any other altenative pills to imodium  (other than diet) to slow down my output  ?

i have checked many brands online and most of them contain anhydrous lactose as a filler

imodium soft gel doesnt seem to have it but contains castor oil which I donno if its ok to take for jpouch and will the castor oil increase bowel movements .

please please help me find an alternative medication to imodium

any suggestion regarding the issue are most welcome

ThankYou !

Ashwini

Hey Jan

Thank You for the prompt reply

Liquid loperamide is an option but it contains simethicon . I have tried gas x in the past and it also gave me cramps and stomach pain so not sure if the liquid form would work .

if simethicon wasnt present then it would have worked great

maybe I can give it a try .. though severe cramps scare me ..i wont know until I try it again

Thank You

M

Loperamide also comes in capsules. I suspect that may require a prescription, but it's just the same 2 mg as the tablet, so perhaps your pharmacist can advise you.

I'd be surprised if the tiny amount of castor oil presented a problem. Castor oil is awful stuff, and one of my worst GI prep memories, but a bowel prep dose is several fluid ounces - no less than 15 ml.

Gee, simethicone should not cause cramping, as it is pretty inert. It just breaks up gas bubbles by breaking the surface tension (like soap). It does not interact with the gut. Maybe the reason you were taking the Imodium was causing the cramps? In addition, maybe they used to, but all the loperamide solutions I could find that are currently available did not contain simethicone. This includes Imodium branded and generic.

I use loperamide capsules and they do contain lactose. They are also by prescription.

Hey Scott

Thank You the reply ...

Interesting Fact that one can ask for prescription for the medicine available over the counter . I didnot know that. Once I had asked  the doctor and he said the insurance wont cover it  since its over the counter so why do you need one .

After that I Never asked again

Thanks for telling me ... I would ask my doctor again ...and this time. I have a good reason  too.

Also I have not tried the imodium gel cap after reading  it has castor oil  because if for some reason I React badly and get severe diarrhea I dont have any medic e to control it. .. so just being careful  before experimenting too much .

But thank You again I will ask about the prescription imodium and check with pharmacist to give me without. Lactose in it.

Note, the Rx capsules DO have lactose. The pharmacist does not make them. My insurance does cover them, but only because my doctor wrote my Rx with a non formulary exception. I've been on loperamide capsules for over 20 years.

It is the liquid formula that does not have the lactose you are concerned about. I was incorrect though. It does have simethicone listed as an inactive ingredient.

If you cannot tolerate any form of loperamide, get a prescription for lomotil.

Hey Scott / Jan

I will ask the pharmacist if he /she has one without lactose .

I use to take lomotil intially since my ulcerative colitis days but didnt feel it helped too much .. I use to take 2 tabs after every bathroom trip ...After jpouch ,I took it for couple years  the same way .. with same expierence .. it would help a little but not too much ... By then I became aware of this group and researched about it .. That when came to know that imodium might work better ... Thanks to this group it worked really well allowing me to do many things and giving me confidence that I dont always have to locate the restroom as soon as I step out of the house .

I am very grateful for this group and everyone here .

Anyways , I will check with the pharmacist and if not then lomotil or liquid imodium are my options

Thank You both for Your inputs
