I have been so careful on my diet because of very liquid output. However, think I have been being a bit too careful. I make my husbands breakfast cereal which contains, nuts, seeds, sultanas, shredded coconut and dried apples and apricots. Every time I made a batch I would longingly look at it and dream of days gone by. A few days ago I just could not resist and had a large bowl in the evening making sure I chewed it very well and what a revelation. Bowels were good overnight, no cramping or need to empty pouch. Next morning I emptied my pouch and it was no longer liquid, it was painless with no butt burn and I really felt empty which was great. Just shows how the bowel really does get better and adapts and us pouchies need to keep on trying no no foods as one day it might just be good again.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Very encouraging.
Interesting post because I had a similar experience. I recently made a granola full of seeds, nuts and dates and was concerned that it might be too much bulk, but to my surprise my pouch handled it with no problem.
Thanks for that. What mix of Konsyl to water do you use? I have tried it but it just makes my output even runnier, wondered if I am putting too much water in.
This is a very helpful post. The signals we get from our bodies are enormously difficult to interpret, and it's easy to fall into unreasonable fears as we struggle for control and explanation. Many of our problems simply aren't food sensitivities of any sort, but food is what we have the most control over, so we look for connections.
If the food in question doesn't cause you trouble consistently, then it's probably not the culprit. OTOH, if you're having trouble most of the time, you can't even do the experiment.

I'd caution against too much faith in any particular theory of diet or nutrition. Essentially none of those theories account for the very different circumstances of a J-pouch. Try things, see what works, and don't be surprised if you get conflicting results sometimes. There are plenty of things going on besides what you eat.
I'm not arguing against a healthy diet. I'm a bit skeptical of major manipulations of inflammation through diet. As much misery as inflammation has caused each of us, it's also an essential body function. If you actually succeeded in turning it off you'd be dead pretty soon.

Thanks FRH, you have prompted me to take more loperimide, which I think is the same as imodium. I am prescribed 2 three times a day plus one after every emptying......which at the moment makes 20 a day. I have and have not been sticking to it but I am going to behave again and see what happens.
Update on my mueslii (granlola) experience. I got way too confident and started eating large bowlfuls......definately agrivated partial blockages which I am seceptable to. Pulled back to a small fistfull again and all is well, infact the dried apples (definately well chewed) seem to absorb a lot of the excess bowel fluid which is good.
With me I think I have different diet requirements/restrictions depending on how my bowel and pouch are which differs from day to day. Also it is not all what you eat but how much in one go. I personally would not go to a nutritionalist as I am the best person to read the signs.

I do love seeds, nuts, & dried fruit. . . they just don't always love me. :-) I got a partial obstruction last time I ate a bunch of peanuts and it scared me enough that I've only been eating nuts and seeds when they are ground. I also find that the ground versions don't go through me as quickly as the whole nuts do. No matter how much I chew them, the whole versions seem to cause irritation.
I've been making a lot of these soft protein bars from the SCD Lifestyle site: http://scdlifestyle.com/2012/04/soft-protein-bars/ Love them! They remind me of Lara Bars and are less expensive since they are homemade. Plus, you also control what ingredients go in there so you can adapt the recipe as you see fit. All of the ingredients are ground up together in a Cuisinart so the end product is smooth. I wrap them individually and freeze.
If you like more of a granola consistency in your bars, look on-line because there are tons of recipes. I've tried several.
Enjoy!

Have checked that out, they look delicious.....will make some for my Christmas Treat this year. I love Christmas Pudding and Cake but I think that would be asking for trouble.

I'd advise against taking 20 loperamide in one day. The maximum safe dose in 24 hours is 16 mg (8 tablets). If it's not working for you, perhaps a different medication would be worth trying.
Thanks for that Scott. Have googled it and you are right. Both my Surgeon and Gastroenterologist said there is no upper limit and in hospital I was taking 28 some days. Think I will write to my Gastro and query it again.
There are some meds that have off-label uses with different dosing trade-offs, so they may be mindfully and reasonably exceeding the labeled max dose. OTOH it sure sounds like it's not very effective for you.
