After my UC getting even MORE resistant to steroids, I've scheduled my colectomy for early Sept (possibly late August depending on patient prioritization). It was a bit shocking to hear the nurse, who sees alot of sick colons, describe mine as pretty sick. Because of my steroid use, this will be procedure 1 of 3 for a pouch. It sounds like I will end up with an end ileostomy for six months. I can't believe I've actually scheduled surgery. I'm both scared and excited to get my life back.

I was wondering what people recommend I take to the hospital and have at home for when I'm released. I'm fortunate that my mom will be staying with me for my recovery so I don't need to be stocked for months...but just having things on hand the day or so after I get home would be nice.

Also, does anybody have a good link or recommendations for what a new ostomy patient should be eating? Thanks!

I have seen quite a few threads on this subject. Do a search, you'll find a lot of great ideas.

For your question on what to eat, think rice, oatmeal, bananas. Some people like marshmellows before they change their bag. Veggies-only if they are steamed enough so you can cut them easily with a fork.

KEep a food diet and write down what you eat and any adverse effects.

Whatever you eat, chew well. Blockages tend to suck.
There is nothing you need to bring to the hospital except books or other things to amuse yourself, as the hospital is very boring with nothing to do but sleep, walk and watch TV.

They will give you ostomy training and supplies. When you are released, a wound nurse will help you try out various bags and supplies to figure out which works best for you. She will also probably help order them.

After a few weeks you'll get used to the bag and will likely feel great. I could go anywhere. It was very liberating.

In short, just find some good books or movies you want to see. Reading a ostomy website or this site might help too, but other than that, no prep is needed.
With my temp ileo the doc has said nothing brown, ie: brown
bread, brown rice. Nothing with skins or seeds. No raw veggies.

Peeled, sliced fruit is OK, bananas are good. Potatoes, mac and
cheese, pasta, smooth peanut butter. Tomato sauce is OK, no skin,
seeds or pulp. They really have been stressing to up my protien
intake to help the healing process. Boneless, skinless chicken
breast is good. Very lean red meat too as long as there's no fat
or gristle. Eggs are OK. Dairy like milk and cheese if you can
tolerate it.
Bring books or an E reader. I don't read, but after staying in the hospital for a few times, I found out I like it. Ohh, bring a back scratcher. If you don't have one, I sugest you buy one. Try not to read too much about the horror stories of J Pouch on the internet. I know I'm guilty of that and I have step 3 coming up in two weeks. I ate pretty much everything when I got home from my first and second surgeries. I stayed away from fruits and vegetables with the exception of bananas and tomatoes and onions when they were in my tacos. I don't eat anything with gluten becasue I'm allergic, so that cut out a lot of breads and pastas, but I just eat gluten free bread and pastas. Good luck!
