Hey everyone

So, my current GI seems to be out of ideas for me right now on what antibiotics are safe or low-risk for pregnant or nursing pouchitis patients. I'm pregnant for the 2nd time (yay!!) and was on flagyl basically the entire pregnancy and while nursing. I'm on flagyl once again but my symptoms aren't ok with me. Not full-on flair but to the point where I'd like to switch antibiotics so I'll have less diarrhea and urgency. His plan is to put me on steroids if I get really bad but I wondered if any of you knew of abx I could suggest he research? Yesterday he came right out and told me I'm his first pregnant pouchitis patient (no real surprise to me. He hasn't really given me a whole lot of confidence.)  It's hard not to get too discouraged or afraid about the "what if's" and all that. Sometimes things get better on their own. I just wish he knew more about what to do.

Cipro and Levaquin are dicey while pregnant, but probably safe while nursing.

Augmentin looks better than Cipro during pregnancy, also probably safe while nursing.

Best to avoid:

Tindamax, Xifaxan, doxycycline

The probiotics, like VSL #3 DS, are surely quite safe, so you could maximize the dose and perhaps reduce your antibiotic need. I take 4 packets/day. Similarly, this might be a good time to see if lower carbs in your diet help you. Also, remember that nursing is wonderful, but only if you can stay healthy while doing it. It's not a catastrophe (nor a failure!) to feed a baby with formula.
