I read a few posts on here about how drinking coffee may help prevent pouchitis as it helps to flush out the pouch and avoid faecal stasis. I like to drink at least one large latte a day. it actually helps me to get rid of bloating. obviously when the coffee passes through to the pouch I have a liquid movement, but once that's done I feel fresh and empty.

It is a shame to have give up something you love. Even if you limited your intake you had problems? I found that for me, gut irritation increased with my intake.

I understand. I too, pretty much gave up coffee after my colon was removed. It just goes right through me in 20 minutes. I've tried it again from time to time with the same results. It's funny that I am able to tolerate most things, but not coffee. Thankfully I've always been more of a tea-drinker, and tea gives me no problems whatsoever. I still get my caffeine fix!
If you really miss the taste of coffee, though, I'll let you in on a little secret: roasted dandelion root tea, brewed extra strong (try 2 bags, covered for about 8-10 minutes) with a bit of milk and honey or other sweetener if you take it, pretty much mimics the flavour of coffee. It's herbal tea and caffeine-free, though. The Traditional Medicinals brand is the best, and to boot, dandelion is traditionally used to treat digestive disturbances (which is why I tried it in the first place, not realizing it nearly mimicked coffee!). http://ca.traditionalmedicinal...sted-dandelion-root/
If that doesn't float your boat, you can try David's Tea. https://www.davidstea.com/ They have a number of blends that offer coffee flavour - just be careful as some of the blends actually do contain coffee beans (though you could always try one of the tea/coffee blends, as in theory smaller amount of coffee may not bother you).
What a bummer. It's not like we wanted our j-pouches to run our lives but mine does. There are foods that my j-pouch doesn't like. I told it right away that it had better learn to tolerate my favorite food pizza. We learned to compromise when it threw a few fits over mushrooms. I hope that Spooky's suggestions help you. She is a very resourceful lady.
My surgeon told me sometimes we just have to make choices. If we like really spicy foods, for instance, and find they tend to play havoc with our pouch function but you still want to include them in your diet......just go ahead and include them. Slather up with lots of barrier cream and know that once the spicy food is out of you, your discomfort should be over. Well, coffee is a "food" I refuse to give up. It causes me to have very loose b.m.s but I figure drinking it is just helping to clean out and empty my pouch. I can live with that for a few hours and if I don't want to live with it I can just not drink coffee that day. I can't think of any food or drink I deny myself! I just accept paying the price!
I have psyllium (and yogurt, and VSL #3) before my morning coffee. I wonder if that's why I tolerate it so well? I couldn't tolerate coffee before my J-pouch surgery.
