My wife pharmacist insisted I treat my pouch locally with probiotics, VSL#3, directly into the pouch. I now add a package of VSL#3 to my mesalamine enema nightly. I hold it all night, I am good like that. A week after starting this probiotic enema therapy, I stopped taking my lomotil and pepto bismol caplets that I used to take every 6 hours around the clock. Pretty much all symptoms of pouchitis have subsided, for the past 2 months now. And no more taking pills every 6 hours to slow my system. I can't say if this is a permanent solution, nor can I say I'll be willing or able to do an enema each night, but it's certainly been worth it so far.

Anyone heard of this? Tried it? Any potential dangers?

What a great experiment! I have heard of a couple of folks who tried VSL#3 enemas, but I don't recall any feedback with long term results or reports from their GI showing endoscopic improvement.

I hope you come back and let us know how it turns out. Maybe your wife would be interested in publishing an anecdotal report?

I have the generic PERRIGO brand to Rowasa enema. I unscrew the top of the enema, pour one pack of VSL#3 in to the enema, then shake vigorously. I note less effectiveness if I expel after 2-3 hours, but if I hold it in all night to kickstart the VSL, the results for me can not be denied. It's amazing how quickly I kicked the habit of taking pepto and lomotil every 6 hours, shortly after starting this routine.

I've been wanting to try probiotic enema. Since it didnt kill you im going to try it. Lol. I have 'Garden of Life Raw probiotic' so this is the one I'm going to try.

I have a question about the actual amount my bowel can hold. I use a bulb syringe and have never tried anything larger. How much solution do you use?

I have a jpouch!

Thank you pouch boy for going outside the box. I'm following you!

Results, again mixed. I have stopped my routine of pepto caplets and lomotil every 6 hours, and take neither of those anymore, after a long tapering period.

I changed my routine to a round of Cipro/Flagyl for a week, then a maintenance schedule of VSL#3 / Rowasa enemas. I also started taking fish oil and culturelle as part of maintenance routine.  I make this last as long as possible, and I do still believe the VSL3 enemas are beneficial to this regime. Rowasa alone has always been beneficial to me, but the vsl mix is more effective, in my opinion.

It's a struggle, and I have not found the magic bullet I've been searching for, for 8 years now, but I do the best I can and not let my down times effect my mood and ability to lead a normal life.
