I just had an examination under anesthesia to verify that I have a small (size of the tip of a ball point pen) fistula from anal area (about 1" from rectum) to the vaginal area. My surgeon has said that that surgery may not be effective so he is suggesting that I just leave it alone as long as my symptoms are minimal. I had been diagnosed several times with bacterial vaginitis prior to the diagnosis of RVF, and I'm wondering if there is a concern with this being a long term incidence. I don't want surgery but I don't want to create a different major problem. Does anyone have any experience with leaving RVF alone even if it creates extra bacteria in the vaginal area? Thanks

Hi,
I have had my small RV fistula for about 4 years now. My surgeon (and I) prefer not to mess with my otherwise perfect pouch. I had my pouch for about 12 years before I developed the fistula.
I have no problems leaving it alone, as long as it leaves me alone also Smiler
I take one large teaspoon of metamucil each morning to thicken things up. It greatly reduces any seepage through the fistula tract. I notice a big difference on days that I don't take it.
Feel free to ask me any questions.
