Hello everyone- just got home from the ER because my heart rate was high and extreme rectal pressure, plus I was having to strain to have a BM. My surgeons team took a look at me in the ER and said I had some tightening and closure and needed to dialate me. He did and it feels much better. I have been taking Flagyl for 11 days (believe to have pouchitis) Dr said if by Friday still having rectal pressure pain I may have cuftitis (sp?) and will need to go on another antibotic. Any one else have this type of problem? Prior to takedown (June 30th) I had to be dialated 4 times. Is this something I will need to have down every month or so? I should also tell you that I am taking immodium daily 3x a day. Is this common?

Cuffitis is typically treated with Canasa, which is a suppository. I had my first bout of it in the spring. It's by no means fun to insert every night for 30 nights (my tip: make sure you're getting it in far enough. It will hurt but then you'll actually feel the pill get kind of pulled upwards by your muscles. If it's in right you should feel it going in but NOT after that! If you're a woman I would use the tampon analogy here) anyway, so while it's a literal pain in the ass, it is effective. Give it a few weeks though - you won't have the same immediate improvement you do with oral antibiotics.

The reason it has to be treated more locally is because oral antibiotics don't work on the cuff the same way they do on the pouch, unfortunately.
