I don't know why this suddenly occurred to me, but any of you who have had a pouch advancement, please advise!

The surgeon tells me that it could be that, after the cuff is removed (or the portion damaged by the fistula) and pouch is pulled down or "advanced", I may have a small portion (of pouch? of rectum?) hanging out of my anus for about two weeks before they can trim it and do the final stitching. If all goes well, everything will be done in one surgery and this won't happen but if not, I'll have to have this trimming and final stitching done 2-3 weeks after the advancement surgery.

(He did explain why this might be the case but, honestly, I don't remember...)

Here's my question: Will I even be able to sit and/or walk if this happens, or will I be stuck in bed that whole time? And how badly will this hurt?

Just suddenly thought of this yesterday and -- yikes! Eeker

Ginlyn,

I just had a pouch advancement surgery consultation
yesterday for chronic cuffitis (no fistula). This issue was not brought up at all at my consult and I do not understand the reason for it at all. I thought they stitched using the very bottom of the pouch after they drop it down, but maybe every surgeon has their own method, however, I have never heard of this before with all the research I have done and I have had consults with three different surgeons for this and no surgeon has ever mentioned this approach.

Maybe you should ask your surgeon again for the reason behind this approach, if you cannot recall, as I would think it is a very important note to remember regarding the surgery.

Good luck.
